Well, with anime or movies it's an entirely different genre - the characters are usually drawn so that the beautiful ones are either the same inside or hiding darkness behind a pretty face. Either way, I judge first on appearance (the first thing you see in most anime) and if the looks attract me I follow through with the characteristics attracting me further. There are few anime characters with good looks that repulse me (some, but not many) so yes - I link looks with attraction. ^_^ I'm very attracted to Hikaru from Magic Knight Rayearth because she's beautiful to look at and mirrors that inside - double attraction, but based first on appearance (before I got to see what her character was like).
On the other hand, I can be attracted by looks but repulsed by characteristics. Even then, the looks still go along with some sort of visual attraction - a wish to be closer in order to appreciate those looks.
