When I first started watching anime, I never realized that it was Japanese. Those were the days when they had Voltron and the Old Skool Transformers on tv. But the thing that really made me aware of anime was the movie, Outlanders. It was a science fiction movie that my friend's older brother had rented and we all gathered around the tv for a viewing. And did have movie caught my attention! Mind you I was only 12 at the time and was used to relating a cartoon movie to a Disney film like Little Mermaid or Aladdin. My perception of cartoons totally changed after watching the movie. It had people actually bleeding and dying. There was profanity and gross sexual humor, "Ooh, natural color!" Outlanders was obviously not a movie for a 12 year-old to watch, but it was a Sunday and we all wanted to relax, so what the heck? How much harm could it do?

I started anime and realized it was anime back in 92 when I watched Ronin Warriors for the first time. Before that I watched Voltron and Speed Racer but didn't realize what it was. But when I was 7 and watched Ronin Warriors for the first time I was amazed and learned about anime. Been watching it ever since.

i saw DBZ, sailor moon, and samurai pizza cats first (lol didn't find out that spc was an anime 'till the 'net, where someone said it was), and while i liked sailor moon, i didn't really get into it but then i saw cardcaptors and escaflowne about the same time and liked both, but i think what really got me into it was princess mononoke, which made me see kiki's delivery service and castle of cagliostro, and soon i was a full-fledged fan!

The first anime I really watched heavily was Samurai Pizza Cats when I was a little kid, and then later (either 5 or 6 years ago) I started watching DBZ way before it was on Cartoon Network, and I started buying that on VHS (I have like 30 volumes, unfortunately). And eventually I just naturally started branching out to far better shows (next two things I began buying were Bubblegum Crisis 2040 and Martian Successor Nadesico).
