Step #1: Watch the series, consisting of 26 episodes.

Step #2: Watch Death & Rebirth. Death being a recap of the series (with added footage), and Rebirth being the beginning of the finale.

Step #3: Watch End of Evangelion. Do so without hallucinogens. Doing so might cause you to lose sanity. Possibly just watching it normally might do so as well. Or something. I dunno. Go nuts. Have fun. Why are you reading this still!?

Eva's not "that" bad of a mind fuck ... personaly i thought Perfect Blue was more confusing. Rewatchign also helps, you can pick out details you missed the first few time around.

I started watching anime . . . oh . . . about four to five years ago (back when anime was NOT popular, NO ONE knew what it was, and you had to get everything fansubbed. Ahhhh, those were the days. ^_~) and the first anime I saw were Kenshin, Eva, Utena, and the Violinist of Hameln TV series. I'd say Eva was the first anime I reeeeeeally got obsessed with. I mean, all I thought about was Eva for almost half a year. And even though now I have two other favorites (Utena TV series and Violinist of Hameln manga), I can't rate them. They're both tied with Eva. ^_^

Oh, about that RahXephon thing . . . I honestly gave it a chance, I really did, but it was just so . . . boring. I personally didn't like it. It seemed like a perfectly good show but . . . I just kept seeing the references to Eva and I got annoyed with it. It was kinda like they were purposely trying to be mysterious and stuff and . . .

Well, I just didn't like it.

eva was the first anime i got the whole series of, i really like it

although nowardays i only really watch episode 24.

EVA isn't a mecha series. The most important thing is the deeeeep plot and the treatment of the characters.
I heard some opinions that Lain is quite similar to EVA, but it isn't. I think that Lain's plot is easy to understand, but the confusion comes because the way to relate the story is bad and slow.
The EVA plot is hard to understand, but you can view the serie very happy without knowing anything... But when the end comes you need to come back and view some especifical episodes that helps you to understand almost everything.
At last, I don't like EVA because is more or less confusing, I like it because is the best anime in the world!!!
