When I started watching Trigun it was on fansubs, so I was already used to the Japanese voice actors. When I started buying tapes (before I had seen the DVDs out and JUST before i got a DVD player :( ) I went for the subtitled version since I didnt really want to take a risk with a horrible dub after I was already satisfied with the Japanese version. Anyway, after collecting the subtitled version of the series, I did have a chance to hear the dubbed, and I must say that I liked the subbed alot better.

So far the only dubbing jobs that I REALLY like are those of Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion. That's not to say that all other dubs suck, but those two really are outstanding. If the companies who liscense anime here in the states would do such a great dubbing job with ALL the series they pick up, I would gladly listen to the dubs over the subs.

the SM dubbing job is awful though...but Trigun's wasn't bad at all

The only dubs I really like is the first 53 ep dub of DBZ (Flame me, elitest asshole..), Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Ranma 1/2. Oh, and add Ghost in the Shell to that list.

Mononoke was my favorite dub. Battle Athletes Victory is a good dub too, and Vandread was done exceptionally well!

Well for one I have to say something other than the usual. Everyone has their opinions about these things after all..........I have noticed a couple things about sub dub stuff.

There seems to be little consistency on what people see as good or bad dubs. Some people say Tenchi and Ranma were good, others hate it...same goes for Cowboy Bebop, Slayers,........ Fushigi Yuugi ....um....yeah *sneaks in a "Tasuki wasn't meant to sound 30 year old clown..he was supposed to be a angry teenage bandit" comment*

Anyway, let me try to shake a few different opinions out about this er...age old war.

What makes a dub good? Is it matching up the new voices to their Japanese counterparts? Is it showing the way a character was meant to be or bring out a new character trait ignored in the original and making a new personality?

Is it talent, and what do you consider to be be talent?

..unfortunately I have to go to work (ahh, I'm late actually) but I will answer this much of my own question:

Talent is making me believe you are not reading what you are saying. Talent is making me laugh or cry..NOT out of embarassment of your acting but because it makes me believe you are there.

Also, when there are screams, they don't sound like you are passing something very painful.

gotta go....

I've just started Trigun, but I didn't think the acting in the dub was that bad. I judge dubs solely on acting, since I am not a rabid purist (the story does not lie in which language it is spoken; the story lies in the story, which is a combination of script, acting, and visuals), nor am I married to any one sound, the "But ___ doesn't sound like that!!!!!" wail.

Now, casting is a concern - I didn't like the casting of Miki in SKU, since he sounded far too old, for instance - but I just don't understand the fetishization of the original audio track. *shrugs*

Watch whatever you want to watch. Who the hell cares what anyone else likes? It's a matter of taste. There is no one "better" or "worse" across the board.

And as already mentioned, DVDs usually have both. (though my copy of Trigun won't play both tracks on all the episodes; that's another matter. :P)

I love the dubbed series as well, Vash's dubbed voice is spastic, hyper and funny, great to show Vash's goofy side, even for that one liner "Love And Peace." Vash's Japanese voice has more emotion which is better suited for his tragic side when he got extremly pissed at Monolev for mowing down that town he was in just to get him, turning Vash into "El Diablo."

The guy that did Vash's voice, Jonny Yong Bosch, and you problably wont belive or want to believe what he did before he got the role of Vash's voice  , click on the name and see. IT all depends on the persons taste, I like both just the same, you cant say that about many dubbed-subbed animes except for maybe Cowboy Bebop, Ranma, and Outlaw Star, enjoy the article

You DO KNOW that Vash's voice is by a former Power Ranger actor?
