Typical fansub sites only charge for mailing costs. I got my Macross 7 and Flame of Recca fixes (two anime that will never come to the states, the former because harmony gold is run by ass clowns who think robotech is the be-all-end-all, yet do nothing to expand the license aside from 10 year old Sentinel novels, and the latter because, um, I still don't know why) from the guys at kodocha anime, I don't know if they're still around or not, but I'd bet they are. That's for if you don't mind VHS, though. I take it there are fansubs offered over the net these days? Must be nice to have broadband . . . . .

I've never had the internet connection to download the episodes offered, so I didn't pay much attention to fansubs in general. But judging by the emails posted, I guess there are a lot - and I've heard for years of people getting episodes off p2p sharers like Kaaza and such (can't use those, anyway), I just didn't connect those with fansubs (who knows what I thought they were, I don't even remember). My friend has some Detective Conan fansubs (vhs - nice quality, though) and I wondered how she got them so cheap, makes sense if it's only the shipping charge.

Other english speaking nations can't gripe about DVD region differences, all-region players are becoming increasingly common.
NTSC vs. PAL is a more difficult barrier, while players that do play both formats exist, they never became common.
Fandom is largely contributing to the problem. Fansubbers are under the fandom umbrella too, let's not forget.
Yes, there are series that are unlikely to get licenced. For these, fansubs are needed to show people that there's a market for it. But the next popular series from Japan that is all the rage doesn't need to be fansubbed these days, because it will be licenced before a fansubber can finish the series themselves and more importantly they don't need to prove that there's a market. Companies have gotten about one third of the drift these days... well, the good ones have.
However, large portions of fandom don't want to accept that. That's the problem.

Kodocha Anime is outrageous! They were selling the whole elementary school arc of Kodomo no Omocha, on DVD, for $100. Good thing they're shut down now... along with the parent site.Cole wrote:... the guys at kodocha anime, I don't know if they're still around or not, but I'd bet they are.

The LAW of the ethical Digisub user...
"Try before you buy..."
If it sucks, why waste the harddrive space?
[Saikano, Wolf's Rain, *cough]
But if it rox0rs [Please Teacher W00T!] then hey, though my job barely pulls in 1 dvd a week, it's there...
Get a fucking job you losers of anime
Or find some legal way of making money if you can't comprehend the word "job".
I'm glad I have a right to say how pathetic some people are when I DO follow that single "unwritten law of perfect digisub ethics"...

Well here we go again. I for one love fan subbers. I think it's neat that people take time out of thier lives to make other people and themselves happy. Ajs response to Uv was childish at best and not at all good for the community. I understand Urban vision actually helped make this series since the demand for it in japan was not as great as was it in the U.S. Ok now that that is said I don't believe fansubbers should stop fansubbing something just because it has been liscenced. Once it is commercially available yes but not before. Also in the case of Inu Yasha I will continue to view fansubs and get the chinese dvds when I can because the Viz release sucks balls!!!! Also does anyone remember how long it takes viz to release Ranma!!! They started in 1995 and they still are not finished!! Yeah i'm going to wait 7 years to finish a series NOT!!!! Now the anime companies are swiping things up too quick like Last exile for example. Of course I intend to buy the commercial release of it but I'm not going to feel guilty seeing it for free first.

Really? They weren't like that a few years ago. Not that I remember, anyway. But then, they didn't sell DVD's back then, either.Jasper-Isis wrote:Kodocha Anime is outrageous! Actually, that's not bad. Fairly typical. Check out VKLL's website. If you go to his order section and get all 9 volumes of Sailor Stars, it's $108 I think.Jasper-Isis wrote:Kodocha Anime is outrageous! What do you people think about the translation differences between Fansubs and legit Subs?
I mean the fansubs will often have notes or explain a joke that is purely based in japanease culture/language whilst subs will often omit it or simply replace it with a western equilvalent. Also some characters have personality quirks that are based within the japanease language (kenshin's "Oro?"..etc) than aren't included in the subs
Note: I totally agree with UV's action against AJ. I do not believe fansubs should be in distribution in a country after they have been liecenced in that country. I'm merely curious reguardings peoples opinions on my Q and since there is already a topic about subs why start another?
