The Difference between Dub and Sub

Post by CliffD » Mon Mar 08, 2004 3:23 pm

As is implied by the subject heading, this question DOES require a little knowledge of both the English dub and the original Japanese dialogue in the series. So here goes:

This question comes from the "Quack Experimental Anime" Excel Saga!!

In one episode of the series, Excel and Hyatt are sent on a secret mission half-way around the world (or, all the way THROUGH the world) to a very VERY familiar American city. During this secret mission, Excel is distracted by a plot by organized crime in the trafficking of Japanese animation cels (HEY! These can get REALLY EXPENSIVE!!). Late at night, in the warehouse where the deal's to be made, Excel interrupts the mobsters with her entrance (along with the help of a spotlight, a cardboard cutout, a couple stylistic hair extensions  , and some VERY FAMILIAR TRADEMARK POSES!! :P ).

The mobsters think it's just a crazy anime cosplayer, and INSTANTLY Recognize the character (WHO WOULDN'T?!?). But they dismiss that particular show as old and passe. Excel's retort to the Mob's dismissal -- is actually the focus of this question, as it is different between the English dub and the original Japanese.

The Question: What is Excel's retort, in both languages? HINT: It DOES help to think of the character Excel's "cosplaying." (Note I didn't say which character?)

Cosplaying as Sailor Moon:

English - "It's not just for kids, I wanted that part but it was dubbed in Canada."

Japanese - " うるさい~!, I was doing good with this stuff until just a few years back!"

In English, she wanted to play the part in it, but Canada...
In Japanese it implies she was part of it.
At least that's my take on it.

Both are right!! As for the Japanese, it more than just implies   !! (For those of you who don't know, Mitsuishi Kotono provided the voices for both Tsukino Usagi / Sailor Moon, and Excel Excel / Dosukoi Hanako).

Azumanga Daioh*.

In a dream of Tomo's, she scores better than Chiyo on a test (which would not normally happen). What are their scores and what makes Tomo's score special?

*May not be in the anime (it's been a while since I saw it, shame on me  ).

Chiyo scores a 0 and Tomo gets 100. The reverse is much more likely. Tomo is also graceful in victory, which would CERTAINLY not happen in real life. This is all the more unusual because the "100" mark has another "100" mark inside of it, making it to Tomo's permanently addled brain the best of the best scores.

I think it's in the anime. I know it's in the manga. (horns up to ADV).

I'll wait a couple hours for confirmation...maybe then I can think up a good question.

Guess not; here goes anyway.

In the oft-overlooked cooking anime Cooking Master Boy, the dim sum master Shell carries a steel pastry staff adorned with gold stars representing chefs that he has defeated in honorable cooking battles....and a single black star representing his one defeat.

So: who was the chef that Shell lost to? (bonus points for naming the dish that he lost to)

Odds on this question will still be here this time tomorrow; if it is, I'll definitely have time to come up with something doable.

Note in order to get more people watching CMB:

The above is a trick question. It's not NEARLY as hard as it looks, and an ep or two at any point in the series is likely all that'll be required to answer.

The bonus part is still tough, though, and does demand that you see a certain episode. That's why it's not the main question.
