For those of you who went to AWA this year, you should know that they premiered the first episode of Full Metal Alchemist in english.
In all honesty I was dissappointed. The main character's voice (Edward Elric) was way too older sounding considering his size and age. If I had to compare it to another voice actor I would say Richard Cox with his voice at a little lower pitch. I give them credit for going with a younger boys voice for Al but the echo effect of the armor that's present in the japanese version is all screwed up in the english version. Its as if its not even there.
For the most part they didn't do a great job on picking voices considering the larger bank of voice actors out there. Keep in mind I am comparing them to the original japanese cast but that's only because the japanese got the voices right.
I will give Funimation credit, the voice actor for Ed did get his more essentric mannerisms down, but when it came to alchemist speeches and what not, he sucked.
I usually keep an open mind when it comes to dubs but I'm really dissappointed with Funi, I really wish ADV had got ahold of it.
So anyone else see it and have an opinion?

If by "right" you mean "first," sure.MAS PRODUCTIONS wrote:Keep in mind I am comparing them to the original japanese cast but that's only because the japanese got the voices right.
I saw the episode at its actual premier at Otakon before the L~arc concert, and I was thoroughly impressed and loved it to tears.

I was thinking that, too. Most of the cast for FMA are ADV regulars like Vic who plays the lead character Ed. I saw him at AnimeFest and was very enthusiastic about this series.angelx03 wrote:Funny how you said that you wished that ADV got Fullmetal Alchemist because a few VAs from ADV does work for FUNimation like Vic Mignogna.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist Dub
I think when he said the japanese got it right was more so based on his interpretations of how the original manga characters would have sounded, not simply the fact that they made it first. I myself havn't heard the dub but i can imagine ^_^VegettoEX wrote:If by "right" you mean "first," sure.MAS PRODUCTIONS wrote:Keep in mind I am comparing them to the original japanese cast but that's only because the japanese got the voices right.

When I said ADV should have got it, I wasn't only mentioning the voice actors. I was also talking about the directors and what not. I think Funi could have done a better job choicing what voices to use and how to use them. I know that they can do better jobs from watching a few of their other series.
And shun was right I base the fact that the japanese got it right by choicing voice actors who sound like what the characters should sound like. Ed shouldn't have such and older, deeper sounding voice.
Hopefully Funimation doesn't get around to its other bad habit of just adding in dailog that wasn't there in the first place. Full Metal is complicated enough without them trying to put in their own dialog. I still wont forgive them for giving Ryo-oki a voice and dialogue in Tenchi GXP.
