vobs != mpg (but .vob is very similar to mpeg2, as pointed out by the wiki entry)
but if you're editing interlaced I'd hate to see the resulting video quality

nah i dont edit interlaced...i use an avisynth script to deinterlace it...

VOBs use MPEG-2 video streams. As far as I know, DGIndex can index MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 movie files just as well as it can index VOBs.
