I'm building a new PC
Simple question: AMD or Intel?
I've been an AMD man my entire life, but EVERYONE says that the Quad core intel blows AMD out of the water. Is this true? I'm going for performance strictly, I don't care that AMD is universally cheaper.
I'm building a quad core rig. Does anyone have an expert opinion? Are there any mega new chips coming out soon? Is the timing right?
love,
julian

...and you know my history and thus for me to say Intel means that well, they are better.
The AMD Quadcore is delayed and has a lot of problems while the Intel Quadcore has been out for quite some time. Ever since the "Core 2 Duo" family was introduced, Intel has (sadly) retaken the performance crown.
I actually built a Q6600 rig about 8 months ago and it's doing well. You can probably get a Quadcore for < $300 too, which answers the second question about timing. It's a good time to buy imo. DDR2 prices are also cheap.
I guess one could argue that DDR3 is coming and higher FSB, but those will be a lot of $$$ and you can build a Quadcore with DDR2 (800 mhz FSB) for < $1,000 nowadays.

Yeah, the Q6600 rocks. Make sure you get a good cooler for it though if you wanna overclock. I'm just using the standard fan that came with it, and I can only keep it stable up to 2.7ghz.
I think the big problem around this time though is what to do about ram. The whole deal with 32-bit vs 64-bit basically comes down to being a RAM issue. 32-bit windows cant really use more than about 3.2GB of RAM. 64-bit windows leads to, possibly, some compatibility problems. And I would recommend you stick to XP. I've been running Vista here for a few months now, and while its not horrible, there are times I wish I was still running XP instead.

The only compatibility problems i've had with 64bit XP was with your x264 encoder zarx. (and some older abandoned software for my MP3 player). 64-bit XP is only windows server 2003 with XP visuals.

Well, you have the issues with drivers needing to be 64-bit, and then there are problems with 32-bit and 64-bit stuff interacting with one another. For instance, I think a 64-bit video codec totally wont work in, say, a 32-bit version of premiere, or whatever.BasharOfTheAges wrote:The only compatibility problems i've had with 64bit XP was with your x264 encoder zarx. Oh, by the way, I think I fixed the problem with my x264 encoder, if you wanna hit me up for that. I'm still waiting around on the new visual studio to come out before I get back messing with any coding stuff though.BasharOfTheAges wrote:The only compatibility problems i've had with 64bit XP was with your x264 encoder zarx.
