Underrated music

Post by BishounenStalker » Mon Mar 03, 2003 5:59 pm

I was browsing through the catalog recently, and I noticed that a lot of really good musical genres such as Broadway, film score, and rock opera are severely underused. What's strange is that these three genres can illustrate a good 75% of the themes that AMV creators accomplish with metal (the most overused genre in the entire database). So why doesn't anyone use them? Broaden your horizons people!

Because the most overused genre is NOT metal but "radio hard rock". Using the widest possible definition of "true" on the most-used artists list, I got a ratio of 17 trend bands to 2 (Metallica and Queen) who at some period in their history could be considered honest metal bands. Why are these bands so heavily used? Because of the stereotype of the 15-year-old Linkinballer who doesn't know anything but what he reads in Circus magazine and sees on Cartoon Network, and doesn't care to expand out past that. Though it is a vicious stereotype, that's the kind of people that are responsible for that statistical leaning in the catalog, and by and large, they don't seem to hang out in this forum. Pretty much posting to the choir.

Also, as iserlohn said in a different topic (hardest kind of music for AMV), it's really difficult to use show tunes (and by extension, rock opera) to fit an AMV because the music has a narrative and a visual identification of its own already. It's possible to break out of that, viz. the excellent comedy video in last year's AWA Pro using "The Pitch" from Moulin Rouge (forget who did that one), it's just extremely difficult.
