Why's it gotta be blind though?

It's been discussed before that when it's not blind, you tend to go into a video with preconceptions about either the editor or the video itself and other factors (like your thoughts about the editor, if you know them, for example) can influence your opinions. It's by far a more level playing field where the videos are judged purely on their merits when all the videos have not been seen before and are blinded.

23 has a fatal flaw for me. And this is no joke.

That song makes me want to strangle the editor. It's just so fucking TERRIBLE.

It's still a good video, but I despise watching it.

I have finally gotten thru my initial pass and now have a list of videos I am going to re-watch, but it is funny how tastes differ... out of all your picks Janzki only 3 of them made it into what I would vote for.

I must say the effects on 23 were really nice, but with a lot of the effect heavy videos on the dvds I was left wondering is this a video or just a nice display of effects with no story. I will agree the song is a tad annoying on 23, but it fits very well with everything going on in the video.
Janzki wrote:I marathoned through the discs today. There were indeed quite a few videos that looked like they were thrown together at the last minute, but overall I'm happy with what I watched. I ranked the videos scientifically and awarded highest scores to entries #6, #8, #14, #27, #28, #42, #52, #58, #61 and #66.

I like #23's song. :uhoh:

I've only gone through the first disc and a half so far, but overall it seems about the usual level for pro. Another similarity with previous years is that Disc 2 is once again the awesome disc.

Video #11 deserves the award for Best Lyric Sync, just for that first chorus.

I will have to re-watch this video then... it felt like there was no editing it was so slow like I was watching the actual episode just set to music.

That's the Kanon vid from disc 1, right? That was exactly what I thought that video was- put a song on the timeline, drop a raw episode on the timeline, trim video to length of audio, export and wash hands. It didn't look like it had been edited at all to me either.

I've not had the chance to watch through all of the videos (shy of the next-to-last on the final disc, which for some reason will not play on anything... but then, the final disc itself will only play on my MacBook. I need to try ripping the disc and watching the file that way...), and I would say that overall I think the average quality is about the same level as the last few years. However... there were more average videos and fewer really 'stand-out' videos than the last few years IMO.

On the whole 'Wow there was a whole lot of Shinkai in the contest,'- there definitely was a lot of it, but what I noticed was that the entries were rather nicely varied with some very different styles and approaches taken.

Now we just have to wait for the voting to go live...

I'm only through disk one... there are a few decent videos, a few complete garbage and a few ok.

About the same ratio as we always have it seems. Maybe I'll feel differently after I watch all the discs and get ready to vote but I dunno... just not as jaded as some I guess. ;p Then again I'm kind of a ghost in the amv community except when it gets around time for awa. Then my creativity kicks in... well in theory depending on how you feel about my videos. ;p
