For the Pro contest at AWA... I don't think I've made the finals EVER. I've entered for the last three years atleast. Does it bother me...yes. Do I stop making AMVs...nope. I'm actually sick of all these videos with tons of effects. You lose the orginal art and story of the anime behind to many effects. I don't usually nominate a video for best of show, but there was one video this year I was going to do that for...guess what... It didn't even make the finals in any category. I was so surprised... I loved the video, it was so good, and my friend aggreed it was the best one we saw out of all the videos. Half the videos in the finals, I didn't even consider for giving a nomination to. People have different tastes.
I decided awhile ago, that I'm just going to keep making videos that I want to make. I'll send them to contests, but I rather see them enjoyed infront of an audience. I rather see people enjoy the video, then worry about how good of a creator I am, about getting awards.

Honestly don't let it discourage you. I've been making AMVs for the past six years, I have YET to use after effects and I never plan to. I personally prefer simple editing than fancy effects, granted they can tell a story just as well and yes AE does look flashier and more impressive but either video can win something.
After those six years, as of this year it was my FIRST year in the finals for a large con. I made it in to both the AX finals and AWA with my video and I didn't use any sort of special editing. I'm quite proud of my work one way or the other.
Plain and simple, the reason I make AMVs isn't because of the cons, I enter videos in cons because it's there and I like seeing my work on a large screen, but I edit because I like doing it. If I ever stop enjoying my work, yeah, I'll quit, but being in a con shouldn't be the primary reason.

Being that I got two nominations for AWA 10 Pro and I neither own nor have even touched a copy of After Effects, I'm thoroughly confused.
Using After Effects doesn't guarantee you an award. And not using After Effects doesn't exclude you from one. The Best in Show winner at MegaCon 2003 (Tom the Fish's Quite a Crowd) wasn't flashy or effects-y in any way whatsoever. It's all a matter of good editing and good concepts.
I can't tell you why you feel crappy about not winning contests. I'm not in your head, and I'm not a psychologist. What I can tell you, though, is that the "good" of making AMVs for yourself even if they never win is just that. It's your creativity, your idea, your expression.
I can't really offer encouragement, either. But I will say this: if not winning at contests discourages you from making AMVs that much, then I think you're making them for the wrong reasons.

Thanks for all the comments guys (and gals). You've made my day (night) a lot better now.
Again, I'm not really in it to win it -- it's an entry to an AMV contest, not a multi-combination trifecta ticket for the Kentucky Derby. So I didn't get recognized with at least one nomination -- big deal. At least I entered... my not being nominated doesn't make me an outsider, but it's better than not having entered at all and agonizing over what could have been.
Not to sound cliched or anything, but I guess my AMV editing ability seems to be more validated by all your comments rather than being nominated in AWA Pro. (would have been nice to get one, though. hee.)
Thanks gang, and I hope to see a lot of you next week!
(p.s. I have a rental car for the weekend for those who have a fear of the BRIDGE OF DEATH~! on Thursday....)

I think you're wrong on this point. Yes, we do have a whole lot of fun trying to figure out just who made what (in the cases where it isn't already very well known or quite obvious)- but in the end, it's how good a video is that will determine whether or not it gets nominated. Well, or at least that should- putting aside certain groups of people who make a point of making sure their friends vote for them and vice versa, most of us don't let who made a video influence our voting on it. If one of our friends made a video that we thought just wasn't that good- we wouldn't vote for it. And if there was a really good video made by either someone unknown or even that we might not really like, we'd still vote for it. Part of the requirements for the Pro contest was to behave like professionals and not let petty personal matters influence our judging. For the most part, I'd say most of us succeed at it.AMV_4000 wrote:first year entering pro, im suprized mine got in at all... i got in 2 or 3 categories... if people knew which vid was mine there is no way in hell i would have got nominated...

thats one reason i prefer to not let anyone know who made mine, and not know who made what, thats how it should be, and to vote because its your friend is crap.. editing is what is being judged, not the person who made it... so laugh at my vid.. cry at my vid.. or hate my vid... as long as it wins or loses for the editing, i'll be happyAshyukun wrote:I think you're wrong on this point. My childhood idol image just shattered upon reading that.AbsoluteDestiny wrote:So you weren't in the best 4 videos in any of the categories...
Well here's a fact for you - neither was Tim "DokiDoki" Park. Does that put things into perspective for you?
Not getting in the finals does not make you a bad editor or a loser, so stop beating yourself up about it.
What a cruel and terrible world we live in.
