xstylus wrote:Actually, it was more a matter of your message prompting me to do a bit more research, and I discovered that the MPAA's limit isn't rigidly 2min 30sec. Studios are sometimes granted a waiver to exceed that restriction for up to one film a year (usually a studio's blockbuster of the year). That made me realize I was limiting things way too much.Tsu! wrote:I actually referred to a certain trailer of yours as one of my key points regarding the time limit. Oh, I didn't mean it as though that was the reason for your decision. Just pointing out my amusement at him talking about sending in the video I had singled out as an example in my message to you immediately post-rules change.

@xstylus Why not 500$ in cash instead of chairs ? That could help us editors to rich more fan base on youtube. For example not all of us want our videos uploaded on channels like Bestamvsofalltime and so on cause it will not help us with anything. People will watch the video and only 10% of that people will get back to you on your channel for exp lolligerjoj1. "Poor guy" he should have right now at least 10.000 subs like nostro or smth, you get the point. Can we have cash like san japan and so on ?

We tried cash prizes back in 2011, and rather insane amounts too. It created an epic storm of controversy. Go hunt the Anime Expo 2011 AMV thread on here if you want more details, but bottom line, cash prizes won't ever be happening again, amen, period.Chemix800 wrote:@xstylus Why not 500$ in cash instead of chairs ? At best I'd consider small denominational Amazon gift cards maybe, and those would be for a lower tier of awards (Best Retro Entry, Best California Local Entry, Best WTF Entry, etc) of which I do not presently award yet (but am considering for a future year).

I'd rather have the chairs. Money is too common. I'm still sad for myself and others who won their respective categories the years we didn't have chairs

Too bad man. It's a pity because with money we could promote ourselves way better. For example anime conventions do not share your videos on facebook even if you win at their contest. I think amvs are not taken seriously enough. You see, Cosplay is way way overpowered at every con but amvs are very hard promoted. Don't misunderstand, I would love to have one of that chairs but money is better to promote and go beyond that level where people make amvs for fun or because "that's the new way to be cool". Amvs should take the new step to Monetization. I bet it's possible and in that way more professional people will get into this stuff and the kidish videos eventually will disappear sooner or later.xstylus wrote:We tried cash prizes back in 2011, and rather insane amounts too. Hmm. Well, let me throw a little fuel on the discussion fire and mention something I've been thinking:Rider4Z wrote:I'd rather have the chairs. Money is too common. I'm still sad for myself and others who won their respective categories the years we didn't have chairs
So, as ya'll know, I give out seven chairs. One is the Best of Show, one is for AMV Chef, and the other five are for each finalist category. The BoS chair and the AMV Chef chair are forever here to stay so long as I'm running the event. In fact, I'd quit if I was ever told to nix them. As for the other five though, I have some concerns. Firstly, I'm starting to get more international entrants and I'd like to have something easier to ship to them. Secondly, there's a couple people who are repeat winners (or multiple category winners) and I'm concerned about filling up their living rooms with AX chairs, and that they'd be discouraged from entering because they don't want another chair. ^^;;;
I would replace the finalist chairs **only** if what I replace them with has the same gravitas as the chairs. Any cheap trinket is right out. I've even given some thought to contracting one of the well respected anime figma companies for the task (I have a friend at Good Smile). Only problem there is the up-front costs for that are enormous. Each year thereafter is less so though. I'd welcome people's thoughts on this.

I can't say I've gotten a chair, but I'm pretty fond of the trophy I got in 2010 and wouldn't mind seeing something like that again.

I'm pretty new at the chair biz, but let me say that Iove my chair and don't want AX to change. In my mind, it's AX's amv trademark, like NDKs Asukas or the Masters jacket. Something to admire and aspire to. In fact, hearing the bonus cat won't qualify for a chair made me a sad panda. It's unlikely, but if I ever found myself in the situation mentioned (living room full of chairs) I'd love it. As Shin said, build up to the dining set.
