I actually like the idea of contests decided by audience voting banning those types of entries considering the negative impact they have on the submission of normal comedy videos.
As for AWA taking an open stance, I think it's a bit silly since that style won't sway the judges like it would an audience.

It does seem kinda odd. Not really any different from "I/we don't like romance videos, so they're not allowed" or "I/we hate this one band, so no videos using their music" - it's completely within the rights of the people judging (it is their contest), it just seems... unexpected?

The question of whether to take action over AMV-Hell styled submissions at various contests has been a behind-the-scenes topic among AMV coordinators of several events for quite a long while now. Some events have had unwritten rules against (or complex standards for) such vids, others simply accepted them begrudgingly.l33tmeatwad wrote:I actually like the idea of contests decided by audience voting banning those types of entries considering the negative impact they have on the submission of normal comedy videos.
The matter seems to have reached a point where a few coordinators agree that it's now necessary to act. Starting in 2015 I think you'll find that that several AMV events (including AX) will be updating their rules to restrict or prohibit such entries from competition. They're great, just not for competitions.

Actually I have to disagree on the "they're great" part. AMV Hell (even the original) was complied by more than one editor, which really helped to provide some variety and quality control. Almost all the ones hitting the conventions are solo editors who often can barely edit that either don't know how to construct a great joke or are simply ripping off ideas from better projects like AMV Hell. It really makes it hard for fun creative videos like Good Clean Fun to do well against even the worst blipvert videos.XStylus wrote:They're great, just not for competitions.

Actually my problem with them is that they don't have to be consistently good. A regular AMV that has noticeable dips in quality throughout the video will get hurt in juding because of it (as it should) for being radically inconsistent. HOWEVER, a Hell video, by its nature rides to the audience based on the strongest segment of the video. Generally no two segments of a Hell video are dependent on one another so if one joke falls flat it won't hurt the next one in sequence. As a result the audiences tend to be very forgiving of all the bad jokes if they have one or two that they find hilarious. Consequently you don't need to get a whole 2:30 video right, just probably about 30 seconds to a minute of it. No other video can get away with being mediocre for 4/5ths of its duration.
Now, there ARE exceptions to the hell rule that are tricky to do and that's when the use of multiple sources and videos serves a greater purpose in the narrative/concept of the video. If you really break it down, Failed Expiraments in Video Editing could be considered a hell video as it is largely comprised of small videos built into it. However, the joke becomes less individual part as it does the video in its entirety. This is what I think needs to be taken into heavy consideration as some videos use quick clips to serve a greater purpose.

Is there still reserved seating for editors at the awards show? I only ask because it seems the venue for it has shrunk to half the size.

Yes, it has shrunk. And yes, there will absolutely be reserved editor seating.BasharOfTheAges wrote:Is there still reserved seating for editors at the awards show? I only ask because it seems the venue for it has shrunk to half the size.
