The way one becomes a judge is by defeating a chef. This year was an exception since it was chef vs. chef, with Kisanzi substituting for Castor's vacated seat. :P

The way one becomes a challenger is by letting Nic, Brad, or myself know. We then confer, review the petitioner's AMV history, and decide which petitioner would bring the best challenge.

For those who wanted to know my reasons for challenging each of the judges, I actually had this all prepared for a speech, but due to time constraints, I couldn't do it.

Wired Knight (Sean): Sean and I worked together for 6 years (2003-2009) on the VG Projects and challenging him would be a good opportunity for him to get me back every time I nagged him saying "Is your video done yet? Is your video done yet?". :P Challenging Sean would have been a good battle between former coordinator and subordinate. Plus being last year's AMV Chef winner, it would have been exciting to have him defend his title.

NightHawk (Kerry): Ever since Kerry started entering AX, I haven't had the opportunity to face off against him in my 5 year absence from the AMV contest and would have like to see how I would have fared against him. However, Kerry came up to me during the AMV 101 panel and said he wasn't really prepared. Kerry was actually going to be my 2nd choice, but I honored his request to decline.

Kisanzi (Matt): Matt's a hardened Iron Chef veteran and literally had a battle plan all laid out to defeat me. Since Matt's been absent from editing for a while, it would have been a good opportunity to get him back into it and he would have given me the best challenge.

Rider4Z (Victoria): Ever since AX2006, I've owed Victoria a rematch, but I haven't been able to get into the contest since then (I didn't enter in 2007, and I've entered every year since 2008, but wasn't able to get in until now). Because of the ever changing nature of contests, especially AX's, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for us to settle the score just in case neither of us made the contest in the future. Victoria was always my first choice, but I also contemplated challenging everyone else for the reasons I stated above.

As for her video, I just rewatched it and it's far better than she actually gives it credit for. It flows quite well, the scenes actually fit the mood, and was quite experimental with the multiple audio sources. I personally thought I was resorting to fan-pandering with mine, but I thought more of a con audience first over artistic merit and I thought Victoria's video had a bit more of artistic merit.

For next year, I'd like to return just as a regular judge and give someone else a shot so I can at least help with the "trainwreck" video and check out the audience participation stuff I missed.

Overall, the entire event looked like it was a blast for the audience and I'm glad it went over well. :)

I was kinda surprised when you chose Rider because early on you had originally told us you were going to challenge Sean. :P

Anyway, I'm glad everyone had a good time. We, as coordinators, learned far more from this year than from last year. Practically the only thing that wasn't experimental was the computers, and now we've got a better idea on what works, what doesn't, and what needs polish. We'll be using what we learned (and the feedback from here) to make next year even better.

And hopefully by that time I'll have figured out the Lagarith glitch I kept running into that made me want to skull-fsck the writers over the hell it put me through the day before con.

It was my first time actually attending the AMV Chef, and over all I thought it was great. Unfortunately I had to meet up with some people, but I came right back to finish up the event. Don't worry about the tech fail, stuff happens. I'm the epitome of patience when it comes to stuff like that.

Heh you know the funny thing is that I actually was convinced that you'd pick Ryder. Strangely I have no more logic for this other than the fact that you two are the biggest DBZ fans I know. But something kept telling me that you would pick Ryder.

I don't mind not editing, the trainwreck was a blast to work on even though it looks so horrible. Though I'm not sure what I'm going to do with that mp3 of happy happy joy joy I had set aside for the contest now.

Great showing this year but I do agree with Yue that for another "do you know the anime" game it would be wise to pick something newer as old shows stump a lot of people and they need some more easy gimmies before people start getting eliminated. Hell each one got by with one guess before they started rapidly dropping.

Great showing this year, I'll be more than happy to return next year given the chance.

Haha, that too. :P

But I was ALMOST gonna pull a fast one and choose Kerry until he declined at the AMV 101 panel.

That was definitely a thought, and somewhat why I selected people before playing the video.
