Some of my Nominations (of videos that aren't that popular)

Post by dwchang » Mon Jan 17, 2005 4:52 pm

Now that the nomination process is about to begin, similar to Scintilla (damn you for doing it earlier), I'd like to post a list of great videos that, for whatever reason, aren't that popular and haven't been mentioned much (or at all). I think I do this annually, but who cares?

This is by no means, my entire list of nominations since, as the title implies, there are plenty of videos that do not need my promotion. If a video is definitely going to make it in, I'm preaching to the choir :).

At the same time, I hope none of the editors I mention will take this as an insult (like "OMG YOUR VIDEO IS NOT TEH POPULAR! :O") since I'm just trying to give them a little positive nudge ;). Also I apologize if I do not mention someone's video. Keep in mind that I surprisingly rarely watch AMVs and many of these are coming from watching at cons.

Now that I'm done with my little disclaimer....
1) I'll Meet You by silver_moon - This was hands down my favorite video of the entire 2004 year. It's a beautiful romance video that is nearly flawless in its edits and subtle syncs. Also forget the fact that I'm a huge Escaflowne fan or that I've made my own Escaflowne Romance videos (i.e. biased) -_-;;. I'd like to suggest it be nominated for Best Drama, Best Romance, Best Sentimental and Video of the Year

2) The Hawk's Tallon: Judeau by SSJVegita0609 - I saw this video at AWA and was very impressed that he made a character profile about a secondary character that many Berserk fans like. I'd like to suggest it be nominated for Best Drama and Best Character Profile

3) Azumanga - Perfect Day by Reoer - Another video that I saw at AWA that captured the "feeling" of Azumanga Daioh nicely. I immediately downloaded it when I got home and was surprised to see it was this editor's first video. He also did not know about "cross-dissolve" at the time and it still turned out good. I'd like to suggest it be nominated for Best First Video and Best Fun.

4) What it Means to be Young by atchang (apparently my long lost brother -_-) - I saw this video at Otakon 2004 (was competing against it even :O) and to be honest, originally I did not like it. At all. I then went home and rewatched it and it grew on me. As well as the song. I got a copy from Ashyukun and I *still* listen to the song (and watch the video) all the time. The song is just that catchy. I'd like to suggest it be nominated for Best Fun and possibly Best Dance. If there was a "Catchiest Song," this video would win hands down.

5) Youta's Love Nightmare by Ashyukun - Speaking of Ashyukun, this video is one that I enjoyed. I will admit that the song and the fact, I beta-tested it certainly does factor into my bias, but this is my post :P. It is a bit reminiscent of "Failed Experiments" and seeing Ashy work from a Romance video into this comedic effort was humorous. I'd like to nominate it for Best Fun.

6) RVG Project 2004 - Track 21 - Devil's Mask by Castor Troy- Now although Zarxrax's track was certainly the most impressive (and has been mentioned quite a bit), I felt Castor's track was one of the stronger ones and more importantly, ntegrated the video game footage and anime scenes quite well (debateably the best). I told him this at AWA, but something tells me he didn't believe me. Believe me now? :P I'd like to nominate it for Best Action and Best Parody.

7) Everyone is Different by IcyCloud - Another video that I saw at AWA and enjoyed. The fact the editor found footage to sync to "squirrel hands" is enough to make me wanna nominate it for Best Comedy and Best Parody

8) Secret Waltz by Pianos - I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been mentioned more, but oh well. This is one of the MADs made by Pianos (who joined the .org in 2004) and probably my favorite of his. I'd like to nominate it for Best Fun, Best Dance, Best Use of Visual Effects and Video of the Year

9) Nature Bears from Hell by Lostboy - Perhaps it's not appropriate to list this since it's not really anime, but oh well. I saw this video with the "Happy Tree Friends" at Lee's panel at AWA and it's just so wrong and thus worth a watch ;). I'd like to nominate it for Best Horror and Best Comedy.

10) A Different Side of Me by Suberunker - I had the pleasure of seeing this video at Anime Central 2004 and was quite impressed to see someone make a good Golden Boy *drama* video. The show obviously works for comedic endeavors, but he did drama and did it well. I'd like to nominate it for Best Drama as well as Best Character Profile.

Wow this post is going to be longer than I thought (I write too much). I'm gonna seperate them.

(continued...)

11) Eternal SKY by bakadeshi - Another video I saw at AWA (or rather the Pro DVDs) and yet, was surprised it did not win anything. The video is a nice little Escaflowne Movie video (did I mention I'm an Esca fanboy yet?) set to an instrumental. It has a nice little story and is really well done. I'd like to nominate it for Best Sentimental and Best Instrumental.

12) The Azumanga Boogie (or Some Girls Like Crack) by (teh) Gambitt - Yet another Azumanga Daioh video that I saw at AWA during Jeff and Ian's panel. Just a short and fun AzuDai video with some of my favorite scenes set to some awesome music. I suggest it be nominated for Best Fun.

13) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Trailer by Kwasek - This and another trailer were my favorite trailers produced in 2004. Just an all around well-made trailer that mimics the original quite well. I'd like to nominate it for Best Trailer.

14) Love in Digital by Vlad G Pohnert - Yet another Otakon 2004 gem that I competed against (perhaps I'm thus biased). Debateably the best "Video Girl Ai" video since Lostboy's "The Fall" and one of the better Romance videos in 2004. Too bad Vlad is still an old-timer  I'd recommend it be nominated for Best Romance.

15) The Lord of the Yen by Altecha - Probably my favorite trailer of all of 2004 and probably one of the funnier things I saw. Oh and look, it's *another* Azumanga Daioh video ;). I'd like to suggest it be nominated for Best Trailer and Best Comedy.

16) Memory by MeriC - Yet another Otakon gem  (like I said, I see a lot of vids at cons rather than at home). Now I am quite the opposite of a Sailor Moon fan, but Meri does such an excellent job that I can't help but be impressed. She melds the live-action and animation footage nicely and presents the parallels quite well. I'd like to nominate it for Best Drama and Best Romance.

17) Three Outta Four Ain't Bad by VegettoEX - You can guess what con I saw this at >_>. Anyway, a Dragonball Z *dance* video that's pretty good. I'd like to recommend it be nominated for Best Dance and Best Fun.

18) Strike On by JCD - An impressive Princess Nine upbeat/action video. I saw this at Otakon and was thoroughly impressed by how well JCD kept up with the energy of the song. Pure adrenaline. His timings were also quite precise. One of the better action vids in a year with very few imo. I'd like to nomiante it for Best Action and Best Dance.

19) Fight for Justice by JCD - Let's get the JCD double-header outta the way :P. I saw this video at Anime Central 2004 (prior to Strike On) and was, again, impressed by his action sync. It was actually my pick for "Best Action," but sadly I was outvoted . I'd like to nominate it for Best Action (uh oh, you're competing against yourself :P) and Best Instrumental.

20) Build Me Up Buttercup by Kusoyaro - The final Otakon 2004 video I'm going to mention. Yet another video from the very talented Upbeat category that year. The editing is pretty simple, but the flow and energy are dead-on. The video just works. I'd like to recommend it be nominated for Best Dance and Best Fun. Oh wait he doesn't have Dance listed :-/

21) The Last Transmission by Corran - Yet another AWA10 gem that I had the pleasure of seeing during the AWA Pro judging. It even won the prestigious "How Did This Fall Through the Cracks Award" VAT Guest Award presented by some guy >_>. It's only appropriate he mention it now <_<. I'd like to nominate it for Best Instrumental, Best Sentimental and Best Drama.

22) Why...? Can't...? I...? by AtomX - I'll be the first to admit I'm a bit biased towards this video since I was the one who gave him and SnhKnives their songs during Iron Chef, but it's just so funny :). I'd like to nominate it for Best Comedy and Best Fun (gee I sure nominated a lot for "Fun")

All of these videos are great, but sadly have not gotten that much attention. Give them a shot and hopefully you'll agree that they're worth some nominations like the more popular vids everyone is mentioning.

Enjoy! :)

And now for some non-video awards:

Rookie of the Year:
I'd like to nominate the following people:
Bakadeshi - I'm really surprised this is your first year. You've made quite a few good vids in that first year.
Reoer - That Azu vid by itself is quite a feat for a rookie.

Most Improved Creator:
I'd like to nominate the following people:
JCD - I enjoyed "Overdrive" from 2003, but you've come a long way since then and impressed the hell out of me with two of your videos.
Corran - Like JCD, you've come a long way since "The World She Knows" (which was awesome too). Just sayin' that that and "The Last Transmission" are pretty different from a technical standpoint and I certainly see improvement.
SnhKnives - I certainly enjoyed your previous vids, but I think "A Typical Love Story" was a major step-up and I love it...like I love Aoi >_> (runs from Pwolf). From what I've seen, you've progressed nicely from video to video.

Creator of the Year:
sillver_moon - Again, forget the fact I'm an absolute Escaflowne fanboy. Nah seriously, silver_moon has been very consistent in 2004 with good video after good video. Same with her sister, but she didn't make an Esca romance video this year >_>.

I would like to add to this list by suggesting I Just Can't Wait To Be King. Again.

For Best...whatever the most appropriate category is. Fun? Drama? Romance? Horror?

But I'd hardly call that video "not that popular" :P

You could make that argument for a good number of the videos on the original list, too. :P
