It's funny to me because I have noticed several USA fans not realize that in Japan Azumanga Daioh WAS for otaku. It was marketed as such and published as such. Dengeki Daioh is a seinen publication but it is also otaku material.
Well, it's not like I wasn't under that impression, but LS is even more so with the constant anime and gaming references.

Overall I think non-otaku can enjoy Azumanga Daioh more than they can enjoy Lucky Star.

Yes, Lucky Star is definitely one of the most otaku shows made. There is a lot of inside jokes and such for that segment. There's a lot of Japanese centric jokes too. Timotei is an example of a very obscure reference. The show's target age will basically just barely remember that.

Personally I don't think this show is something that will be anywhere near as popular in the USA. My own entertainment would not be so high if I did not have the otaku background and did not have some Japanese friends.

For some reason, I don't find Lucky Channel that funny. Maybe it's just me, but it's definitely not my cup of tea.

I get a chuckle out of it sometimes, but usually I don't find it all that funny either ;p Most of the gags that get me are in the show itself.

Episode 9. Sports Festival Time!

Some highlights:
Spoiler :
Kona-chan's dad speaks!

We get to see how Kagami would look with (really) short hair.

Kagami really does stuff with enthusiasm. :P

Kona-chan no otosan, that's an impressive camera. Wait...

Konata's 100 meter dash competition gets rendered as a Kyonani® Track and Field game. This sequence is golden.

We get to see another character from the opening (Ayano Minegishi, she of the long orange-brown hair with a headband and blue eyes).

Tsukasa is our Osaka. I get the feeling she is selected to her event (hurdles) by default.

Miyuki is surprisingly athletic. Plus, she wins by fanservice! And we get the return of the BGM from the Initial D parody.

We get a cute musical sequence with Tsukasa and Kagami.

I like the sequence where the girls are in the cafeteria line.

And my final bit: poor Konata, I've done that before (books and CDs).
Lucky Channel has some nice amusing moments this time. And surpisingly, Minoru doesn't die this episode (although he sure seems like he has a death wish). LC isn't still quite the same caliber as the main show, though.
