Two new vids for the price of one, What a deal, yo!

Post by thundercatlord » Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:16 am

Alright everyone, I've got two new vids.

First Light wore the Joker's make-up in "The Death Knight", now he dons V's mask in "K for Kira"

AND....

I realize this concept has been done, but I wanted to take my own stab at it.

Enjoy, and let me know what you all think!

I don't know what is up with the whole Avenue Q and Death Note pairing that seems to be gaining popularity as of late (), but I guess it works.

Anyway, I thought the lip synch was done extremely well. It was really quite entertaining. 4.5/5. Only real problem is the audio is kinda quiet and perhaps not its best quality.

I kinda liked both
The first one had some minor problems, but not too noticeable and entertaining to watch. I liked the first more than the second one.

Well fuck me sideways, two whole videos for the price of one! Can't beat those odds, lets crack these puppies open. I've broken my thoughts into two sections so it's a bit easier on the eyes.

K for Kira
You mentioned in your initial write up that Light had also played the role of the joker in a Dark Knight video, presumably a similar parody to this. I commend you for managing to apply Death Note to so wide a variety of tonal sources, going from action to something as light and upbeat as Yag Si Thgil. It's not a coincidence that both of these videos look pretty good, so it's clear that you've got some nice talent as an editor to be able to execute such contrasting tones so well. My immediate recommendation is to get out of the trap of a source; if you've edited a lot with Death Note before this, and these two are Death Note videos as well, you're really not realizing your full potential as an editor. It's interesting to everyone and even to yourself to see your style applied to a wide variety of sources, both visual and audio. At the very least for me, it's what will keep drawing me back to your videos and looking for minute changes.

Moving off of the general feeling I got, as you probably already know this video is very solid. Using this source is a very specific decision on the editors part, so I was initially confused as to why you would almost sabotage the entire point of V for Vendetta (that is, a hero who's beliefs so far overshadowed his own need for something so simple as an identity) and use his identity with a character who ONLY cares about his identity as Kira. It creates a pretty interesting contrast and for me I really began to examine the differences between both V and Light and what stemmed from their beliefs. Both lived fairly well, however Kira had a God complex that eventually resulted in his own downfall whereas V's humble nature allowed him to successfully carry out his vendetta against those who had wronged him. I think that subtlety about this video and the way it made me think is what makes me prefer this over your other Death Note video in this thread.

While the combination works on that deep level, on the surface it doesn't really do much. The action sequences synced up okay, but the general feel seemed to be a little off and the lack of a masked character made me wonder what drew you to put these two sources together. The idea that you've already done a Dark Knight trailer to Death Note raises some questions in my mind to as to whether you actually have a purpose with these videos, or if it's just you taking "cool things" and putting them with Death Note because it is also a "cool thing", which would be a pretty simplistic connection on your part.

Yag Si Thgil
This video I don't have nearly as much to say about. The idea has been done before and as you said this is just your take on it. What I noticed between your version and another one of my favorites, was that your version lacked the Karaoke subtitles that the other one had. Yours was definitely better edited, had nicer cuts and lip sync, but the creativity of the other video with it's subtitles puts it a little above yours in my book. For such a fun song, it'd be interesting to see you step a little bit more outside Org editing standards and be a little more playful with it yourself; it is a fun video after all! Put some of that fun into your editing, and I think it'll pay off in the long run. Instead of just doing what you have to do to sync, add little things in the background. If you look at some of Driftroots video's you'll notice that element to them as well. It's a great video still, I would say its a 4/5 for sure, but to get that extra point to make it a 5/5 you have to put some of your own personality into it, some of your own spontaneity and jokes. THAT is what really makes a fun video for me, but I can't speak for the rest of the community.

Despite any of my complaints please only take them as constructive suggestions, both of these videos were very well edited and I would give each of them a 4.0/5.0

Thank you for your comments. And I have told myself these are my last Death Note AMVs for a long time. I have a bit grown tired of it. The main reason I did these two videos were to pass the time between my other major projects. These were done just for fun in editing, I don't really plan on submitting these to any AMV Contests. I may send "Ya Si Thgil" to a couple...like Yaoi-Con.. I definitely agree that I don't want to get stuck in a Death Note trap.

As for what you've said about "K for Kira". Yes it is true that Light is actually very different from V, but that's what make the video interesting right? It is kind of a parody in that aspect. An no, I don't intend put "cool things" together. I just have an idea...like "Oh, this would be an interesting concept.." And then I go to work. Oh and the "mask" is the identity Kira if you will... So when you see the computer screen with Kira on it, it is kind of saying..."this is the mask Light wears."

As for Yag Si Thgil...yeah I know of the other similar vid. And while I like the idea of the sing a long...I didn't want to use that in my video because I didn't want people to think I was copying that vid. I actually had a Mudkip on Light's desk at one point...but some of my beta testers didn't like it so I took it out.
