At the Canal Café, held by the pretty Rosette
On the trunk of a linden tree providing shadow for the ball
Could be read under two intertwined hearts
"Bring your own kisses"
My kisses, I had lost them
And I thought I'd already kissed everything
And I didn't know that you were there
And that your new mouth was lined with them
Up until now, I hadn't been lucky
Fairies hadn't paid much attention to my cradle
And every time I fell on a patch of nettles
A wasp would be there to sting my neck
Yet, my luck is with me today
Under the green arbour of your curved lashes
When you looked at me for the first time
My old freedom started to stagger
We were alone in the world in this populous ball
And with a single hand I held your waist tight
Your breasts pushed against the pleats of your blue bodice
They nearly won the battle
I love the sky because it's in your eyes
I love the bird because it knows your name
I love your laugh and all those curious words
Which you whisper to my coat's collar
And I still see your hands crossed on your chest
Your clothes thrown on a bedside chair
Your poor heart was making small sardine leaps
When I laid my head against it
God, you thank God! That's so like you!
But my love for you is way stronger
Could God have slept with you
For a whole night without touching your body?
