Fencers in love - new vid

Post by SarahtheBoring » Thu Apr 08, 2004 10:21 pm

In retrospect, "Fencers In Love" would've made a good title. But it's not. The title is "The Clouded Heart," it is a simple, quiet little romance video about fencers, and it's right here:

The song is "Looking Through Patient Eyes" by PM Dawn. The anime is Revolutionary Girl Utena, but it skips Utena and the main plot to tell a story about the tangled romantic lives of three of the minor characters - Jury, Ruka, and Shiori. It's more mundane/everyday than one might expect from a RGU video, which I liked trying out.

With this one I wanted to try to tell a story - there's more about that in the notes. At any rate, it's all very, very simple (very simple... very), one of my back-burner projects that slipped up the queue to get finished unexpectedly. :)

Just a soothing lil' tidbit that some of you might like. Have fun.

Good Job! I really liked the simplicity, it allowed you to focus on the story more which is a good thing as this doesn't seem to be your average love triangle (I unfourtionatly have not yet seen Utena, so I had to watch carefully to follow it. I think I got the gist of it though.)

You prove that rules are ment to be broken. Unwanted lip flap is a huge downer in my book, but I think it worked perfectly in your video.

The speaking sections don't really flow as well but have some interesting lyrics: "Oil and water, lust and sympathy, our life and death. . . that leaves my memory a traumatic sponge."

Overall a great video, proves you don't need flashy transitions, just a good story. We need more of these...

Well, the story in the AMV goes differently than the story in the series, so I had hoped that people could follow it even if they hadn't seen the series. (It combines four different episodes a bit out of order, and cuts out a lot of stuff. The short-haired girl is actually kind of evil in the original.) I'm glad it at least sort of made sense. ^_^;

Yeah, the lyrics are kind of impressionist and hard to understand; this group is like that. Made it difficult to follow them directly. Sometimes it's meant to parallel the lyrics (as in most of the choruses), but most of the time it's not. Just the general mood.

So anyway, thanks for giving it a shot, and thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it.

Any particular reason why "Fencers" and not "Duellists", btw?

I think it's because a) fencers sounds more artistic, and b) Jury is the captain of the fencing club, and Ruka was the old captain.

Anyways, you already know what I thought, but I'll say it again. Nice, retro look at what I saw as a boring relationship. Definately one of my favorites by you.

Oh, and FYI, if you don't like the video's title you have, I think, two weeks where you can change it.

You know, good question. *thinks of an answer on the spot* Basically because this video leaves out the main plot, and the whole theme of revolution and dueling for the Bride. It deals with three of the duelists' lives in entirely mundane terms (okay, except when they appear in the arena, but ahemrmrm*mumblemumble needed a dramatic peak to the action mumble*).

Ruka and Jury bond almost entirely through their fencing-club activities, so by necessity of footage it becomes a backdrop to this AMV. So I tend to think of them in terms of fencing captain/co-captain rather than two of the Duelists, for the purposes of this one.

Good enough reason? ^_^;;

Actually I like the title well enough; the thread title is just a mite cheesier than the title as it stands.

Thanks, all!

Fair explanation - I was just curious, not asking you to change it :)
