Last Days

Post by vivafruit » Mon Jan 18, 2021 2:06 pm

This marked a first in a lot of ways. It's my first amv done in Sony Vegas, the first time I clipped everything myself, and the first time I've tried editing to classical music. It's also another 10 minute amv - I think I'm a masochist or something. Overall I'm proud of how it came out, but it was challenging to make. My guess is that the topic, song and length might be a turn off for a lot of people, but I'm hoping it finds a small audience that finds it compelling.

This AMV was almost a little too sad for me to "enjoy" but I think that's part of the deal here.

I wouldn't call this video relaxing or chill but it was smooth, for sure. Unlike lots and lots of SAD AMVs, I never felt like you were imposing emotions onto the viewer or disrespectfully abusing scenes out of context.

This one left me with a lot to think about.

First Note: I love your AMVs so much. You're AMVs are so very raw and real. You don't focus on effects or adding transitions, you just stick with the theme and follow through. I love that about your videos!

Second Note: This was a very powerful piece you displayed here, there is so much to think about with this AMV... I was very emotional watching this AMV, in the sense that this AMV shows just how powerful the feeling of grief and loss is... This AMV was very impactful and very beautiful. Well done.

Last Note: No Anohana?

Thanks so much. I was really hoping someone would be able to connect with it emotionally, and it sounds like it really worked. I am not sure if my amvs will always be so minimalist. I am still slowly trying to pick up some of the techniques that other editors use to make their videos look more professional. But I'm really happy that the amvs seem to be working with the tools I know how to use right now.

AnoHana is interesting. I downloaded it and scanned through it for scenes, but it was hard for me to find something that matched what I was going for. One issue is that the series is very dialogue driven.
Spoiler :
In the final scene where Honma disappears, there isn't a strong visualization of it - the series mostly focuses on reaction shots of the characters, and in dialogue it describes their thoughts and emotions. That's great, but with no dialogue I found it hard to convey the same grief in the amv.

Kind of jealous of your excellent use of Tsumiki no Ie. I've tried a Tsumiki no Ie AMV as well with an instrumental and obviously got the basic idea of it but it really felt like you delved deeper into that little story. The scenes you used in silence were excellent in making a contrast and giving the viewer a second to ponder on that contrast. I think this particular thing you did well throughout.

The cuts at the middle where the piano arrpegiates I think felt slightly rough. Probably one of the moments where it didn't feel as seamless. Having a mix of small and big dissolves for those or in some cases like with the Your Lie in April ,having less of those abrupt cuts, would probably make it better. Usually I find a hard cut only works like in the beginning of your AMV where you had longer sequences. If I pause or rewind I get it but going through it the first time, it feels somewhat random and it feels like well someone is editing something taking me out of the immersion. I do get though that trying to nail a change in tempo can be hard. Basically I think the idea is that this is the phase in the AMV that shows the struggle for life so I do like that there is an idea behind the scenes you chose and their order.

But going back to that, the use of Silent Voice felt somewhat random as yes, it shows a funeral but there weren't too many scenes of "struggle" that lead to it. The cuts with the piano are pretty good but again, I'd suggest a transition of some kind rather than a hard cut for some of those.

Although I like the sort of match cuts of "disappearing characters" from those anime after the Silent Voice sequence, the art style is a bit different from the rest where it's sort of noticeable. Some times you can't fix that but changing the aspect ratio of "From Then and There" probably should've been done imo to match the rest of the sources aspect ratio. Also something I noticed from the comments - I do think Anohana would've been good as its basically the most well known anime involving disappearance and letting go. The ending scene where she disappears in front of everyone maybe could've been used. I find when I did a sadder AMV it would go well with other scenes where a character disappeared (one of the episodes of Sword Art Online) or something like that.

The ending of the AMV itself is excellent and there's a very good sense of closure from some of the plots (though I do wonder if some of them would make sense if a person didn't know the anime). As a whole it's really good and it's a concept/thing that I really appreciate (trying to tapestry different anime that people might not've watched and trying to give them a jist of it while also having something behind it) . The sense of direction is really good just some slight things I think could've been polished up.

Thanks for the very detailed feedback. To try to explain why the Silent Voice clip was there, I was going for a "story" that begins after the Tsumiki no Ie stuff that tried to outline the stages of losing a loved one. I wanted to show the transition from realizing your loved one is dying, to trying to enjoy your time with them anyway, to having them suddenly get worse, to the shock immediately after the death, to the grief as you begin to let go, and finally to acceptance. I really have no idea how well I communicated that, but the Silent Voice is supposed to be the "shock" part. The girl has just lost her grandmother and feels like she hasn't internalized the death yet.

For the Now and Then Here and There clip, the way it's framed would make the clips of the boy look very bad if I tried to match the aspect ratio. Example: Image.

I did think about removing the close-up shots of the face and stretching the sunset, but decided the reaction of the boy was too important. I also thought about just cutting the clip completely, but for me it just matched the theme too well. It was one of the first clips I imagined when I was listening to the song. So I decided I was willing to sac the awkward ratio mismatch to keep the clip. Still not sure if it was the right call.
