Pili Pili (Artist Polo & Pan)

Post by vivafruit » Fri Nov 06, 2020 5:26 pm

Had a ton of fun making this one. Sometimes I'd throw a clip in and just start giggling like a maniac. Throughout the whole thing I concentrated on matching rhythms and instruments of the song. There were some spots where I had to compromise (that's not what a Melodica sounds like), but I tried to be as accurate as possible. Coupled with the cheesy dancing the final effect is pretty satisfying.

Ok, I just have to gush about this some more.

Getting this out of the way first - from an objective view, there are a few parts of this video that are a bit dicey editing wise. Some of the clips you repeat/make play back and forth are a bit jarring, there could have possibly been a better choice/a way to make this smoother. The cut out clips are mostly ok I guess, apart from the one girl who's side on while the kids dance in the schoolyard. The cut out around her instrument is super dodgy. The Mob Psycho clip also had some of the credits in it which is a bit distracting (though not sure if it's possible to get that Op without any credits in it).
Honestly you're most likely aware of all this, also none of this really detracts from my personal enjoyment when watching this cause these are all things that don't really bother me that much tbh, especially in videos like this that are simply a bit of fun.

Things I love about this! I adore this song, you chose really well on that front. I love the selection of clips you've got, you've kept it wholesome and also used a lot of clips I've never seen before which is refreshing, especially in a dance video where clips tend to get recycled a lot.
The type of sync you've chosen for the most part makes me super happy. Bits I especially love are the way you use the door from Jujutsu Kaisen, the Mob Psycho clip, the way you synced the instruments etc. My favourite part is 1.41 - 1.48, I have no idea what anime that is, but something about that clip to that part of the music just works so well. I also think 2.57 - 3.13 where you go full Copycat Revolver is really fun.

Again, I really love this. It's super fun, happy and wholesome and I'm addicted to watching it.

YES! This is so good! I love it when editors sync up instruments, and I wish more upbeat vids would do that (I even used those same Eupho scenes for a dance vid last year, lol) I especially love those trumpet/sax parts, really got me moving |:>
Oh yeah, and that song is LIT.

Much of my comments here would echo katranat's: this video is great and it deserves to be credit free. There's probably (?) a clean version of the Mob Psycho OP clips that you used, and I'll go to my grave wishing that this video had included them. (Or I'll be super humbled if I find out these clips don't exist, whatever). The sequences at 2:32 and 2:50 are great, and I even like how you have the masked character zooming in and out like that (exactly what you're trying to accomplish here is hard to put into words but I think it works better than keeping that clips totally stationary on the screen), I just don't understand why it looks quite like it does and I'm afraid it's one of those things that my eyes just kind of go to and can't quite ignore. I guess I have mixed feelings about that because on another level, I find the imperfections here kind of charming. I don't mean that as a backhanded compliment or anything. I'm just bored as hell with sterile and soulless 60fps epic serious AMVs and your work has always been a beautiful antidote to that for me. Yet I also wonder what this video would look like with some of these seams painted over, so to speak. tldr: I have profoundly mixed feelings about some of the technical aspects of this AMV.

Musical instrument sync is great, even when it feels slightly off it still worked for me. It probably helps that this is just a fun and goofy video and not an attempt at something overly serious. Dancing scenes were super fun and a perfect fit for the spirit of the song.

Every time you showed a character opening a door (no idea what anime this is from but that never mattered to me), it perfectly matched the changes in the music. I just loved this as a recurring motif and it always reset the mood and the energy level in a really effective way. There's at least a half dozen fantastic little 5-10 second sequences in this that just blow my mind and never leave this AMV with a chance to drag or give my attention any opportunity to drift away.

Watching your videos has been a welcome escape for me all year long. I love what you're doing, thanks for sharing your work here.

Great, thanks everyone for the nice comments and feedback. Glad people had as much fun watching as I had slapping it together.

Sadly there’s no creditless op for the Mob Psycho clip, I guess because the credits are animated into the sequences and you’d have to redraw them to get them out. But I agree it’s kinda distracting. The funky mask around Reina in the trumpet sequence was mostly just laziness, and I don’t have a great excuse for that one other than that it was my first time using masks. There is definitely an argument I made in my head that the kinda shoddy effects sort of add to the “low budget fun” theme of the amv, but I probably should have fixed it before posting, haha. This is kind of out there, but I think a lot of the nitpicky stuff doesn’t matter for the “experiencing” self. Instead it only crops up after the fact when the “reflecting” self thinks about it. Sort of Like how people enjoyed Star Wars 7 at first but later disliked it after reflecting on the plot. Sometimes I get frustrated with the reflecting self and just want to focus on optimizing for the experiencing self, but I probably go too far.

Oh well. If I can figure out a good way to hide the credits in the mob psycho clips I might release a small v2 patch this month.
