My AWA 2019 Videos [Dopamine & Alohomora]

Post by Kireblue » Wed Nov 13, 2019 8:33 pm

Here are my 2 AWA 2019 videos. I feel that these 2 AMVs represent 2 of my biggest loves in anime. Magical Girls and Yanderes :awesome:

I'm really happy with the way this video turned out. When I first started editing it, I decided that I wanted it to be as jarring and off putting as possible. My intention was for the video to make people so uncomfortable that they'd hate it, and even hate me for making it. And so the scene at 2:40 was actually the first thing I edited. But as I finished more of it, I decided that I still wanted the video to be well edited, and so my new goal became to keep the video just as unsettling, but well edited enough that people would be still forced to appreciate it even if they dislike the content. Based on the reviews that I got during the AWA P.R.O competition, and it winning the "Best Horror" Award, I think I accomplished that goal pretty well :D .

And here is my Iron Editor Practice video for AWA 2019. The competition was between Rider4Z and KeiichiFace, but I was invited as a surprise 3rd competitor. And so it was also a rematch from last year where I lost to Rider4Z, but I ended up loosing for a 2nd time even though the theme was Magical Girls, one of my favorite genres of anime. I'm still happy with my video though, and it's always fun being able to compete in it :D . And for anyone interested in the song, it was made by NerdOut as a tribute to the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beast movies, so I felt that using it was a extra special touch.

I haven't seen this anime but really enjoyed this AMV. The editing was simple and yet complex at the same time, and you did a great job setting up the mood and atmosphere, as well as setting up a story and following it through until the end. I feel even without seeing the anime I was able to grasp the intended story. Nice! (Pretty catchy song too. Never heard it prior to this AMV).

Dopamine was a pretty effective horror video, one that doesn't give away everything it's about right from the very beginning (there's a risk to this, a lot of viewers who don't have patience to watch an idea slowly unravel itself over the course of a minute or two might expect and demand AMVs to go all-in on their genre from the very first frame, I'm glad you didn't bend to these expectations). There is a certain feeling that you establish right from the get-go that something is a little off here, that yeah, this is a total moe anime AMV but maybe (for viewers who've not seen this series, viewers like myself) that's not all it's going to be, but you take your time to slowly expose what that is. That approach really makes for some undeniable tension, the shocking climax feels genuinely earned.

Alohomora -- this was super pretty, I think you did a really good job somehow bringing all these sources together. I don't know how you (or anyone) makes Iron Editor videos that feel so complete and not like exercises in random clipping.

I know the thread is locked, I wanted to comment on these before that happened but the window closed before I had a good chance.

Thank you so much! You summed up my intentions for Dopamine perfectly :awesome: . I really made that video for people who haven't seen the anime, because I felt that if you already knew the plot, the shock value would be completely lost. I also wanted it to feel like a television drama where you're on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what's gonna happen next. So I'm really happy that you enjoyed both Dopamine and Alohomora even though they're so vastly different. I think that Rider plans on posting the video that she beat me with pretty soon, so you should definately be on the lookout for that one as well :D
