This Is How We Burn [Gurren Lagann] SMASH! 2019 Best Action

Post by Opner » Tue Jul 23, 2019 5:25 pm

Gurren Lagann is one of my favorite shows and I absolutely love this song. I had so much fun making it! I was hoping that it would join the many great TTGL AMVs out there but I'm not sure if I've done it justice. Feedback would be very much appreciated!

That's a keeper. Excellent pairing of a space opera anime with a rock opera soundtrack. Incredibly good use of both external and internal synch.

Two small quibbles:

1) early on you had a bit too much lip flap. This was especially noticeable in retrospect because you ended up doing some very natural feeling lip synch from the middle to the end of the video. It made certain I didn't forget the lip flap from the beginning.

2) some of the internal synchs seemed too late or too early. This is possibly not you, but me, as a viewer perhaps my focus was not what you meant to synch, but if I observed correctly, there were a couple of missed opportunities that made go "awwww, darnit!"

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I'm glad you noticed the internal syncs. That was my focus for this video and I gotta say it's not that easy :asd: :asd: . I've always been bad with lip flaps because they don't bother me that much and I only recently figured out how to fix them through masking so that's something I have to pay more attention to.

This isn't detailed! Since the extreme slow down of the org I haven't given a detailed opinion in several years, but a detailed opinion looks something like this:
Spoiler :
Good:

1). Video Quality
2). Audio Quality
3). Editing Synch
4). Digital Effects
5). Reviewability

1). Video Quality - Your video quality was really excellent. Although I could detect some jaggies, they really weren't all that annoying. I'd suggest next time that you deen your source via avisynth if you can. If not, temporally smooth on setting 4 in virtualdubmod. For DivX though, it's quite excellent.

2). Audio Quality - You encoded in mp3 and probably in a decently high bitrate. Sounded good. I had to turn down my speakers. Definitely no complaints here.

3). Editing Synch - For the most part, this was really, really good. Now, I can only rate your action/aural synch. I can't rate a lot of your action/lyrical synch. I have never seen Bleach, and as I'm an elitist who refuses to see really popular stuff, I probably never will. But I will go over your action/aural synch in detail:

00:06 - Moving shadows on moving sounds.

00:10 - Flash on sound.

00:11 - Flash on sound.

00:13 - Flash on sound.

00:15-00:16 - Ooh, double flash.

00:18-00:19 - Again, double flash.

00:21-00:22 - Same, but it's okay, because the song is as repetitive.

00:24-00:25 - Same.

00:27-00:28 - Same.

00:30 - Yay, words.

00:31-00:33 - Flashes on words AND sounds. Double the aural synch pleasure.

00:35-00:36 - Double flash.

00:39-00:40 - Double flash.

00:41 - You really like the flashing. Now that I am stopping every few seconds it seems more annoying than cool, but that's just because I'm stopping.

00:43 - Okay, we'll not mention the flashing anymore, but nice lyrical synch with "fade to black."

00:53 - Now this is cool. I love the way you have Angry Rukia looking around on the quickneing of the tempo.

00:55 - I also enjoy the fact that the red ropes break off on "I" and how she looks like she's being brough towards executioners (hehe, condemned, I get it).

00:58 - Things Rukia has done. Lyrical and aural synch together for the win.

01:07 - "knoooooooooooow" on a tunneling scene. Nice aural synch.

01:15 - By far one of the best synchs in this video. I'm not sure if you did the twisting yourself, but it is an awesome aural synch that really, really looks cool.

01:20 - ...Dying to "Heaven." Disturbing, but I clearly see the lyrical synch there. Nicely played.

01:28 - His smile reminds me of the "I like Naruto" cat from 4chan. Nicely aural and lyrical synch on "society."

01:40 - Why yes, if you can draw a flashing sword out of a digitization of Tokyo, there definitely must be something more to that universe than you can see.

01:41-01:46 - Nice aural synch sequence here, makes me want to headbang.

01:51 - I recognize there is a lyrical synch here, because I can see the deliberate editing choice, but my lack of bleach knowledge means I don't get it.

02:00 - Flame lyrical synch. Okay.

02:07 - "That we cannot understand" synched with sakura petals. Cool.

02:08 - Twisting again.

02:13 - What is with you and bloody disturbing scenes to "Heaven"?

02:21 - Dead elites on "society." Again, disturbing, but accurate.

02:32-02:38 - Another nice sequence.

02:40-03:00 - If anything this sequence is the most disturbing of all because the audio becomes deathly silent and there are sounds of babies crying in the background. Creeeeeeeeeee-peeeeee.

03:01-03:13 - Ow, my eyes hurt. Good sequence though.

03:14-03:20 - Nicely done aural synch with the clash of the blades.

03:21-3:24 - Aural synch "wah wah wah-wah" to the running.

03:27 - Explosion transition was nice.

03:28-03:38 - Rukia, dear, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Probably why you're looking all Jesus Christ Second Coming right now.

03:50-03:57 - Another nice sequence, but no more disturbing death scene on "Heaven."

04:00 - You seem to have lost your lyrical synch completely, but your aural synch is still really cool.

04:10 - Nice spinning synch.

04:22 - Bad guy got killed on beat?

4). Digital Effects - Used wisely. See above for details.

5). Reviewability - Now this is where you surprised me. I generally hate "zOMG fighting AMV!!!111oneoneleven" entries, which is why I say no naruto and no DBZ, but this actually got better with each opping pass I did. This is not only unusual, I do believe it's the first time I have experienced this with an AMV. Usually either an AMV gets old, or it stays as awesome as it was in the first place. Rather, this video I didn't really much like back in April when I originally watched it. I've watched it a few times since then, trying to get this op done. Sorry for the wait, but I really needed to finish my AWA Pro Entry. Anyhow, your video is arguably better now to me than it was in April.

Bad:

1.) Originality

1). Originality - Despite liking it, this IS a zOMG action video. The fact that I like it does not change the fact it is strong, fast, hard music to fighting scenes for the most part. Although you did have some lyrical synch in there, and you obviously tried to tell a story with Rukia, I just didn't feel it. Had you not even attempted this, originality would been more like a five, but since you did, I give it a seven. This is really your lowest score.

Overall:

Overall, this video was much better than the standard fighting video. it grew on me, so reviewability was high. Video quality and sound quality were excellent. The action synch was excellent. An attempt was made to go into a plot or story of sorts, but I was unable to see it develop. As such, the video remained in the standard fighting video category. Generally, an above average offering that will go into my permanent collection.

Sweet baby Jesus that's something else... Making AMVs has so much craft behind it but it's not very noticed and it makes me sad :(

That's not even my longest, most verbose opinion. It used to be what the Org was known for over other places where AMVs might have been found.

:( :( Just wonder what happened to this forum. I really think AMVs are only getting more an' more popular each year, so it's just weird.

I might say it's youtube, but youtube's been a thing for over half the time this place existed, not to mention you can't just search ''amv'' on youtube and find something good. The only good Amvs I find there naturally are either through recommend or trusted creators I follow.

The rest of the lip movements are clearly lip synch. Not tight lip synch, but fairly typical music video type lip synch. I wouldn't consider them flap.

The nature of the internet in 2019 is extremely short attention span. I believe the issue now is simply that those coming into the hobby are not used to the relative slowness of forums. Not only are posts slower to appear, but there are higher expectations around responses. Even the "quick reply" box is slower than a comment section on social media platforms. It also requires the use of bbcode in order to quote, insert images, links, etc. There's no giphy...

But it's also I think just the firm belief by many that forums are for discourse and discourse is nearly dead. The best way to counter that, I suppose, is to engage in it yourself. That might spur on others to respond in the same way.
