Lost Contact

Post by The_McLaughlin » Thu Oct 16, 2014 7:55 pm

Finished my newest amv about 2 days ago and finally got around to uploading it. Overall I'm pretty proud of this one considering it went from something I was just going to scrap because it wasn't coming out how I liked to something that I think is one of my better action amv's. Also, even though I only used it once in this video, I finally figured out how to rotoscope stuff, so now I can use that effect more ofter if I so choose to do so (granted I don't use a ton of effects but it is always nice to add to my arsenal) Even still I know that there are areas I could improve on it even if I didn't notice them so fell free to comment as I'd love to hear what you guys think of it.

I caught the one rotoscope you did, I almost missed it it was so quick :dino:

I probably didn't understand how it all fit because I've never seen the anime and I'm not keen on understanding what thrash metal vocalists are saying, but otherwise not bad!

Thanks for taking a look. Yeah I originally wasn't planning on using the rotobrush at all, but that one section wasn't transitioning well at all and I've seen tones of videos that use that to help transition scenes in action amvs so I decided to give it a try.
Yeah, seeing the anime would probably help understand who the "lost contacts" are, but I mostly just wanted to make an action amv... I had a hankering, and that song every time it played I was all, yes this would work so well. Anyway glad you enjoyed it.

Decent video. Try giving more attention to detail to your video's pacing & scene selection. It felt like it was unfocused for a large portion, except for a few moments like 2:04. Still, kudos on choosing a song like that, and for telling a story. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Pacing is one that I've gotten a few times in Opinions I tried focusing on it more on this one, but I shall continue practicing it, and soon I shall get good at it. Thanks for letting me know though now I know I still need to work on it.

^ This. I honestly didnt find the story clear enough but I can tell you are still fairly new to this and exploring various ideas and techniques. I recommend you stick to your current direction, focus on improving your ability to make seamless transitions between clips, sharpen your story-telling by making good selections before you fully dive into effects.

Important note, not all amvs need a story at its heart but continuity helps the flow of the edit. I dug this up http://www.veoh.com/watch/v1171711nYQ6wRYX, as this was one of my VERY EARLY action videos, during my explorative stage and it kind of explains what I mean.
I spent the 1st minute introducing all the main anime/characters I planned to use for the mix, and any other character that showed up later on got featured at least twice before the last act. IT didnt have the best action selections but there was continiuity and that helped drive the story. I hope this makes sense and helps you.

Overall keep it up and hope to see more stuff from you.

I giggled when the video first started playing as the audio it was the opening theme for Darker Than Black, and I found that ironic. Anyway thanks for the advice, my next two ideas (granted one of the two I won't be able to put up here because it's not using a anime source) I've written down a ton more notes for, so I think the story may be more apparent in them once they're done. Where as this one I knew I wanted to make an action video that flowed really well and then I tried to tie in those fight scenes in the slower portions of the song. So I shall try to make the story I was trying to tell a bit more obvious next time.
