Guilty Crown - Lost and Isolated

Post by Geroth » Fri Jun 08, 2012 4:32 pm

Hey guys! I just registered here today and was hoping to share some of my amvs with you :). Although I have a lot of experience with video editing I've only recently started to edit anime as well so I would love to hear your opinions and advices.

Here is my latest (only 2nd) amv, based on Guilty Crown. It's supposed to be kinda sad and emotional as the anime itself and it contains some spoilers so be careful if you have not seen it yet ;).

Lost and Isolated

Anime: Guilty Crown
Song: Blowing Out The Flame by Avantasia

And then there is the first amv I've ever finished, which is based on the anime Black Cat. It should be safe to say that there are no spoilers in this one. You may notice a bit poor quality of the picture here which was caused by some rendering settings I didn't notice before.

The Black Assassin

Anime: Black Cat
Song: Iron by Woodkid

Well, that's it. I hope I didn't break any rules by posting my amvs that may not look as pro and cool as the other ones around here :).
As I said, I would love to hear your opinions ;).

Of course not! Everyone posting here is looking for critiques and how to improve themselves. Pro or not, everyone is welcome here. :3

____________

anyway, I watched Lost and Isolated.

For only your second AMV, you've got some of the key aspects of successful editing. Mood/atmosphere is great. The music and video seems like it really worked together in an appealing manner and felt like they belonged together. The ending bit with the talking was adorable. :)

However, there are some things that you can improve upon.

Cut out the watermark in the top right corner. VERY distracting to viewers and its a very easy thing to fix that doesn't hurt the quality of the video at all.

I think storytelling/concept could use some work. It would be a difficult time for people who haven't seen/read Guiltry Crown to understand what exactly is going on.

Transitions. Sometimes you had some very serious changes without much h eads up to the view. :52, for example. You go from a depressing scene to a scene with flowers. Perhaps a fade or some sort of transition would be more effective?

Pacing. You've got the slow pace of the non-chourus parts down well. However, your pacing needs work on the faster parts. 1:30-2:03 is a lot faster than the rest of the AMV, but your cuts/scenes are the same speed as the rest of the slower parts of the video. Here's where you so the most dramatic scenes, the action sequences and really show us the "KA-POW" part of the anime. You did this to a degree in 2:58-3:30, with the battle sequence and the character showing a more fast paced emotional response.

Be careful when overlaying such as at towards the end. Make sure that what you're overlaying doesn't overtly distract from the action scene at hand. Some of the overlays hurt us from seeing the action on hand.

Still, nice job. You showed off guilty crown pretty well. Made me interested enough that I think I might want to check it out. :3

Also, be sure to check out this handy guide, it's good for anyone new into the editing world: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/v ... =2&t=92942

I'd also work on visual quality. WMV is not the greatest container in the world, and there are better options out there. Check out our visual guides on the main site, or check out our technical forums.

Thanks a lot for your comment, I'm sure it will help me improve :D.

To be honest so far the only way how to remove the watermark that I know of would be using some selective blur which would also distort the picture behind the watermark... but perhaps there is some more efficient technique, I will do some research ;).

As for the story telling part, because I used some major spoilers in this video I was creating it mainly for the ppl who have already seen it so they wouldn't ruin their story and with that in mind I wanted to create something sad and touching.
I fully agree that the pacing could use some work to be more in sync with the video and I'm already trying to achieve that with the amv I'm currently making (now I'm trying an absolute audio/video sync but it's taking a really long time to finish it).

It has been a long time since I got some useful critique, thanks again ;) :D.

By the way, about that wmv - I'm never using this format and the original video was rendered in avi in much higher quality but it was too big to upload here and I didn't have the original files to render it again so I simply compressed it into wmv to reduce it's size.

I have to agree, the fact that it's your second amv is pretty amazing, I don't know about others but my 2nd amv sucked and when I say sucked I mean that if I were to compare your Lost and Isolated with mine 2nd you'd win hard time. :)

As for the technical stuff; Pretty much what Code said

Thanks :). I'm pretty excited to have my 3rd amv almost finished, just a few more hours and it should be done. This time I've put so much more work into it so it should be much better :).
