Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

This video took about two or three weeks to make. All in all, I enjoyed making it and I hope you enjoy watching it.

There's quite a bit of room for improvement in this video. Some thoughts you could possibly apply to renovating it, or otherwise just keep in mind for future projects:

First, do your research about aspect ratios. Most of the characters look too thin; since the frame is widescreen, this suggests you stretched the footage vertically rather significantly (I hope not to hide subtitles). This kind of error stands out a lot to regular editors and is very distracting.

Take careful consideration of matching the intensity of the song. Starting at about 9 seconds, the guitar becomes very intense with the rapid palm-muted riff. This speed of playing would go best with rapid cuts or a lot of action or motion in the footage, but instead you've got a long shot of the girl holding her head - it doesn't fit very well. This problem occurs almost every time the guitar riff picks up, but the editing from 1:05 to 1:09 is a good example of editing that matches that pace more adequately.

You tried lip-synch a few times but didn't really match the lip motions properly. This is also very distracting. If you want to lip synch properly, you sometimes have to edit frame-by-frame so the mouth movements coincide with the syllables. This can get very tedious, not to mention being difficult if the character is moving, so if you don't think you can lip synch properly, it might be better not to do so. Also, imo, a young girl doesn't fit Serj's voice very well :P

The flying sequence starting around 43 seconds goes on for too long. Careful with filler clips like these, they can become boring if they run for too long, since nothing is really happening. Also, your encode quality is rather low, so that clip has turned into a blurry mess.

I hope this is at least moderately helpful advice for you. Good luck, and keep editing - you'll find yourself always improving as you do.

So, first off, sorry for not replying right away, I've been doing other things.

Actually, all of the clips I used were 1280 x 720 so I'm not sure why they "look too thin"

all of the "lip-sync" was entirely unintentional.
Also, your encode quality is rather low, so that clip has turned into a blurry mess.
not sure which parts you're referring to here, I did try to make the steins;gate clips pixelated as an effect, I don't think that it worked out too well though -_-

Thank you though for your advice, I'll certainly take those things into consideration for my next project

Well, not to be rude, but you must have done something wrong. The top is correct, the bottom is yours.

It's not only Girl Who Leapt Through Time that is off, many of the clips are.

If you can't tell by how the characters look, the easiest way is to pay attention to circles. If they are oval instead of round, the aspect ratio is off.

Considering it's System of a Down and even probably my favourite songs of theirs, I had to check this out of course.
The video wasn't the worst, but it had some obvious problems, especially with the pacing. While the general atmosphere of the clips suited the mood, I would have expected more scene changes and especially more intense editing which was needed to nail the song.
I literally laughed my ass off at the scene around 0:16...at first I was like..alright...she's walking over the street....this is akward.......why is such scene added to such insane riffing?...... ...what the hell? Did she just get hit by cars?
The scene around 2:50 was unfitting. "I wasn't there for you"...yet...she is dying in someone's arms. Doesn't seem to make sense at all.
And of course there's the quality issues which Cyrix already mentioned.
The video should not have been encoded with such huge frame size, the quality basically looked like a pile of shit in most places. Evene when resizing to a small size as 640x360, the quality was anything but good. A lot of utter pixelation.

Either way, if you are curious about seeing examples of what can be done with this song and how you could have made it a better fit, I suggest you check out Tsukins "Seizureline" And Stolen Souls track in SOAD: RTI.

The encode quality is very bad throughout, but this is the worst part. Click on it to view it fullsize; it's just a muddy mess.

Oh, and I almost forgot. Look at this one full size as well:

See the ghostly double-image? That's frame blending. Frame blending is horrible. If you're editing in Premiere, right click on your clips and uncheck Frame Blending before doing any editing. If your sources have frame blending throughout, they are garbage, and don't use them (however, some anime will use frame blending for budget fake slow motion and other visual styles, so it might appear in occasional shots).

Sorry if I seem too harsh, but this is all technical stuff which should be pretty easy to fix in the future.
