That's because -- surprise! -- Caldwell's MPEG-1 version is actually 352x240. (Flagged for 4:3 like any such MPEG-1 should be.)Kionon wrote:And oddly enough, your "320x240" Caldwell screencaps are not 4:3 (I checked against my copy of Caldwell's original), but your "640x480" caps clearly are. O.o What's up with that?

What's all the fuss about the cropping? If what the editor is after is Engel in top quality, then why not use the whole available picture? I doubt the cropping in the original file was an artistic decision.
I was going to mention the video in my last post, but I kind of forgot.
I'm glad you fixed the synch on the boat and in the lift (the first was the only thing that ever really bothered me), but there are a couple of parts where the editing doesn't work out too well. Apart from the aspect ratio and Asuka's teeth, I thought her head whipped around a bit quick during the bit taken from the power-cut episode.
If I were remaking this video (and I did consider it at one point), the series would be 640x480 and the movie 640x352 and manually letterboxed.

DUR. I should have known that. However this does illustrate my point of what "flagging" is and what it does.Scintilla wrote:That's because -- surprise! -- Caldwell's MPEG-1 version is actually 352x240. This is true. Let's go ahead and call it optional cropping, although I would do it, just to make sure the aspect ratio displays matched.
This is exactly what I was asking for. That would produce the ideal 4:3 resolved copy for downloading. If I were remaking this video (and I did consider it at one point), the series would be 640x480 and the movie 640x352 and manually letterboxed.

I love you. +1Castor Troy wrote:I'm gonna do an Engel remake with DBZ now. :P
I watched the remake and thought I noticed scene differences, but it's been a long time since I'd watched the original. It could just be the fact that your framerate (well, considering the techies here, let's just say how many frames you actually got compared to Caldwell's capture) is higher than the original, so it flowed more smoothly and allowed for really tiny detailed motions to show up. That's probably what's messing with me.
Great work... but I agree with Kionon. A computer-optimized resolution and aspect ratio would rock.

Working on it =)
Alright, I can live with that. We'll just see if I'll be able to upload another one.
Sounds to me like I should do the cut to 640x480 with the Platinum-footage (using a little crop). Then is there an exact size I should give the EoE segment before adding letterboxes?
"Powercut"?
I couldn't really tell everytime it was "supposed" to synch up correctly, so I just corrected everything that had been bothering me up until now. So hopefully, all scenes that are obvious deviations from the original should sync up better, all the others should be unaltered.
What's this about the teeth? Is it any of my photoshops that look weird?

After our conversation, I was thinking that you won't finish it. My bad. =) You've made great job. You fix some my errors. And now aspect ration in the middle the same as original (this wasn't mistake that was my choice). But you added some lypsyncing erros, which, I think, could be seen by others only frame by frame. But I see this video nearly 500 times, so I catch it. =) And there is some problems with coloring of video. The colors are so dark. (My source video was way lighter but very noisy). You took the original scenes in 3:45, but the timer still there ... I couldn't find this scene too.
Great work, it's a pitty that I got full renewal after 5 months I made my Remaster. So for now I can change my version with yours.
And it would be good to see other remastering: Believe, Caffeine Encomium, Sleep Now, e.g. I hope, you'll think about it.
