I actually love Escaflowne's ending because it wasn't a traditional romance ending and yet their relationship is easily one of the strongest romance relationships I've seen since they could love each other regardless of actually seeing and being with each other.
I actually find that retarded in most romance shows that love is some conditional thing that requires the person to "be with" you in a physical sense. In fact, the creator of the show finds it interesting that westerners find the ending "sad" when in fact, it's not at all sad. Even the last frame is of the two of them seeing each other since their thoughts will reach each other.

Well again, they are together forever. Separation does not mean they don't love each other still. They can "see" each other anytime they want so long as they're thinking of each other.
