Feedback on cataloged Anime Music Videos

Forum rules
Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

downwithpants' Fan Management Thread

Post by downwithpants » Mon Feb 28, 2005 4:43 pm

ok you're probably wondering about the thread title. this is an experimental thread aimed to provide a crude means of fan management until site programmers are able to implement it on the site.

How it works
if you want to receive notices whenever i premiere a video, click the link that says "Watch this topic for replies" on the bottom left corner of the page. everytime i premiere a video, i'll make a post in this thread, and an e-mail should be sent to you if you've clicked that link and kept up with updated posts.

Purpose
my main hope is that this will start a trend among enough editors such that the fan management system will have a good coverage of the editors posting here. please label the thread title "<username>'s Fan Management Thread" or something of the sort so people remember if it comes up in their emails.

Problems
keep in mind, e-mail updates will also be sent whenever someone else posts on the thread. but hopefully there will be a way to discriminate between the two types of post because based on the nature of amv announcement threads i predict:
-posts that don't announce new videos will occur for a brief period after the new video announcement
-then a long period will pass by with no activity (i know this is true for me)
-then the editor announces a new video.
so if you're watching this topic, an e-mail update on this thread shortly after previous one will probably be a post that doesn't announce a new vid, and a post weeks or months (months for me) after previous ones will probably be a post that does announce a new vid and hopefully not a necropost. if you want to make a comment on a video and it's been a long time (>1 week) since the last post, don't post in these threads; send the creator an e-mail, pm or leave an opinion.

however, this requires you visit the page at some point each time a new post is made since your last visit, even if it isn't a new video announcement post. i realize that with popular editors or controversial videos, there can be pages and pages of comments, which may get annoying to keep up with. there are a few solutions:
-the editor can ask comments be kept to a minimum (no spam).
-the editor produces one thread dedicated to announcements that only that editor can post in it, and a separate thread for each new video for discussion (this may be in violation of forum etiquette though).
-subscribed fans will just have to deal with it.

anyways, i'll see how the idea goes. it may:
-work and catch on with others,
-not work and revisions to guidelines will be made to make it work.
-not work after revisions and i'll abandon this thread and hopefully the idea will be forgotten.

also just for this thread, feel free to post comments about the idea (in addition to my vids). my fanbase is pretty sparse so it shouldn't cause much trouble.

i've sent this vid to anime boston so if you're planning on watching the amvs there, i'd prefer you not watch this until after the convention. i <3 feedback.

Hmm...

You have some interesting pacing here that somehow gives this video a different feel than other Hitomi/Van videos that I've seen. I'll try to leave you some more feedback after I've watched this a couple more times.

And... erm... I really don't think that this fan management thread thing is going to catch on. You gotta admit that it's easier and more attention-grabbing to just create a thread for every new release. :P
