Hi,

Not a glowing review, but an honest one, please consider
it as such!

I watched Akira a long time ago and I was interested
in what you had done with it. I hadn't heard the music
you used before, and I'm afraid it's really not to my liking,
but that's of course a matter of taste and shouldn't reflect
directly on my impression of the video. Whether I liked
it or not, you decided on a song theme which was
appropriate for the anime you chose and on that level
it was a good decision, as opposed to, say, selecting
Britney Spears (unless it's a parody). One problem though
is that the lyrics were incomprehensible to me. Once
I found them on the web I understood much better what
your were doing, but unfortunately it just didn't come
through while I watched the video and was trying to
understand what the guy was saying.

Given that the subject matter is Tetsuo's mental
disintegration I think there's a bit too much action
in the video and the pacing becomes a bit monotonous.
You start out well, lots of doom and angst from
Tetsuo, then the chorus kicks in and you show more
action-oriented sequences. The problem I find is that
the song slows down again for more brooding lyrics
but you keep showing action sequences and fights
(the song's a bit too long and doesn't really have many
words, so it's actually pretty hard to make a video with
it as it is). Your timings are good, but the overall pacing
needs some work.

At some point during the video you used greyscale,
which is a subtle effect I usually like, but I can't quite
figure out why you used it (perhaps because it was
a hallucination?) I don't think you need the titles, what
you're showing already gets the point across.

I haven't seen your other videos, so I'm basing the following
solely on this one: my suggestion would be to pick a song
that you like which is easier to understand when hearing
it for the first time, and also perhaps something a bit shorter,
maybe between 4 and 5 minutes. I think you got all the
right ingredients, but need to make something tighter,
with better defined changes in pace. Given the anime and
music you like I think you could do interesting things with
stuff like Ghost in the Shell or Gunnm (Battle Angel)...

Thanx a lot man, it's always good to here back. The greyscale was for like memories, i guess i didn't use it correctly. Like when he was changing into the 'blob' i used the grey as to thinking back to when the 3 children were attacking him. Initially i thought the song was great for what i was trying to do. But after reviewing my video a few times, i was wrong. I dunno it was ment to be more of an abstract video, it was my first attempt at such, usually i do a lot of action videos. But you're completely right, and im glad you didn't scold me completely ;). Thanx for watching it, and taking the time to give suggestion to better my abilities, i appreciate it so much. Oh by the way this is probably my favorite video i've created, if you got time maybe you can check it out =] It's in my signature.

Yes indeed, I liked this one better, it's as if you had addressed
all the points I made above (but of course you had already
made this video). The song is understandable, it has the
right mood, and most importantly the pacing is appropriate
for each section of the song, with well-defined segments.
What I think still needs a bit more thought is your use of
greyscale. The first time you use it it's because Mononoke
is dreaming, right? It seems that way as the scenes around it
are of her sleeping (and if I'm right -- which may not be the
case -- I have a further suggestion: just before the dream part
we see her waking up... I think you want to show her falling
asleep, which is easy enough to do simply by inverting
the video in time-- I've done this a couple times when I need the
character to fall asleep :). In any case, I think you use the
effect a few more times afterward and it dilutes a bit its
impact (I'm also really light on eye-candy -- mostly because
I can't actually make it -- but the little I can I try to make
meaningful).

Anyway, those are just details, overall this is a really good
effort, very nice!
