Angel's Egg - With Testrauschen

Post by TaranT » Fri Oct 31, 2003 4:17 am

A Halloween video: Garden of Lost Souls

Keywords: moody - ambient - Gothic horror

Note the spoiler warning.

Users of Ritalin and Prozac should heed the ADD warning.
Mamuro Oshii's "Angel's Egg" has a story that at best would be called ambiguous. I once heard him speak at a showing of the anime and even he was unable - or unwilling - to say what it meant. The artwork is as beautiful as it is dark and brooding. A near perfect match for this music which in its own way is haunted and at the same time uplifting.

Unlike the anime, this video does have a clear if simple storyline. Briefly, a girl (young woman?) is lost in a strangely threatening place. Scenes of familiar, yet oddly alien life and death bring panic and an untimely end.

Heh you chose the song I would have used too. A very nice, moody and atmospheric video. Frankly I liked it better than the actual movie. :)

I'm glad it worked for you. Angel's Egg is not the easiest anime to like, but I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of Oshii's works. Along with Miyazaki, he's one of the most cinematic of anime directors.
