No Express Like 999 | Devin Townsend AMV

Post by YourMindOnLeji » Tue Aug 27, 2019 11:30 am

This is my first AMV. There are very little Townsend AMVs out there and none are for the Lejiverse. So I made one in an hour or two. It's good, but I love the RAW of 999, as it has subs and is in poor quality. I wanted to do AMVs since I saw AMV Hell.

Trying to evaluate this without being distracted by subtitles.

This was kind of hit and miss for me, in general I like watching any AMV that feels like a big departure from what most people are making and sharing online in 2019, so I enjoyed the retro feel of this and the simple editing.

This song is really loud and intense and it kind of felt like it was stuck in that gear from beginning to end, so there aren't a lot of dynamic shifts in this video or opportunities to ratchet up the action or pull it back. Even some of the most intense action scenes retain a sort of static quality that probably works just fine in the context of the film, but left me kind of wishing they provided a bigger hit of adrenaline in this context.

I kind of followed the story, some things were still unclear, but maybe this was less of a storytelling AMV and more of just channeling the essence of the anime into an AMV (or at least your personal experience of it).

Seems like you know what you're doing and you've got a plan, all I'd suggest is to try to work with cleaner footage and I think your ideas will come into focus a little more effectively to the viewers.

I got the footage off of a youtube video of the film. It was low quality (only 240p), and I stretched it into 480p (my standard for release). I may want to remake this later, but include more of the 999 films, such as Aidu and Eternal Fantasy. The song is rather short and bit too intense for a slower film like the OG 999 film, so it may be better off being with Captin Harlock or Space Battleship Yamato, which contains a lot of action scenes. I rushed it a bit at the end to finish off the AMV in a satisfactory way, but it ended up being janky and not up to snuff. I need to find RAWs or dubs. I can probably just buy them off of Viz media or whoever distributes them.

Thanks for the review.

I'm with seasons on this one. You seem to know what you want to do with the source materials and enjoy doing so. Sure, the editing itself is quite rough, which is something that can be expected from a beginning editor. For example some scene cuts clearly has some unwanted left-over frames in it. You have something going on here though, and I'd like to see you go forward and improve!
First step should be to focus on getting a clean source material. If you absolutely must use something with subtitles still in it at least crop them out. People will notice it, but it's still way lesser evil than having unwanted subtitling in the video.
