Fighting For Love

My newest project. I came up with the idea for it awhile back but couldn't do it right away due to the cost of the footage. However it is done. I know it's not without problems, to be honest I lost interest in it, but had already put in a lot of work on it so I still wanted to finish it. I do think it's better than the last action one I put out with Darker Than Black though as most people commented on how that one lacked story where this one has a story line connecting all the action sequences together. Also there are black bars at the top and bottom of my footage... I don't know why. I used the same settings as all my other amvs, the original footage didn't have it and it didn't show up in the preview window of my editor. So I have no idea what I did wrong... and I couldn't get rid of them so that's why they're there. Just in case anyone comments on them... if you know what I did wrong you should totally tell me. Anyway despite this amv's faults I'm still pretty proud of it and I hope you guys enjoy it. Would love some feedback on it so that I can continue to get better as an editor. Enjoy

Was going to just leave a QC but then I decided to not be a lazy bitch and actually post.

Conceptually, I really like this. The general idea and sound of the song fit pretty well and the lack of Rihanna makes this song tolerable! :D That builup with the shoutouts to the homies and such could have been cut, but it's not a total dealbreaker.

But you've got some things to work on. While I get you're going for a story you're sticking too linear (progressing in order from start to finish). The first minute or so of the video feels like watching a really fast recap of the first half of the show and doesn't really add to the concept beyond the "hopeless" place.

Also, dynamic! When the song comes down, the editing needs to come down with it. During the 1:00 minute fight, the song is slower, subdued, building to what will eventually be a breakout but they're going nuts and fucking that red rat thing up. I get why you did it lyrically but the tone of the song doesn't match the visuals.

The next section around the 1:20 mark is actually really cute because it's the first time we get to actually see the characters interacting! You do a really great job of showing them in different situations, serious, silly, fun, etc.

But then Kirito goes off to fight BossMan McGee for both the buildup and the chorus. Another part where dynamic is no bueno. A buildup is supposed to do exactly that, build! If the action remains constant through the buildup AND the chorus it makes that big breakout the chorus is supposed to have feel really flat. Think of the way a roller coaster climbs to the top and builds suspense before that massive drop that makes your head explode! Instead what you've got going on is a rollercoaster traveling a very flat track but incredibly fast. There isn't any change and it doesn't really cause any difference for the viewer, it just keeps going.

After that point it seems like the rest of the video is just more linear battle sequences. This video could have been actually really great (I had super high hopes for it) but the length combined with the linear editing that didn't really add to the concept and lack of dynamic hurt it badly. Building a story or creating a solid concept doesn't necessarily mean you have to follow the series in order from beginning to end.
Spoiler :
Since this is just a suggestive that is more based off of my style of storytelling, etc. I figured I'd just stick it under a spoiler. If it was me, I would use the basis of "found" to create a concept. Found implies that it could be something that happened in the past. This gives you the ability to open the video with the characters already in a relationship and much further into the series and use the chorus sections to go back in time and show progression of the relationship from beginning until catching up at the end of the video with the timeframe presented at the start. More of an "Our Story" type of concept. Again though, this is more based on my opinion of how I personally edit videos. There are quite a few ways to go about it though, you just need to experiment!

Thanks for the feedback I shall try my best to get out of that linear process of thinking, and continue to try and get my action building with the song. Thanks so much for the advice.
