Firing that editing noobtube [AMVs by Paco]

Post by pacotacoshell » Mon Jan 02, 2012 6:08 pm

Well I'm a new AMV editor, I started about 1 to 2 months ago. I will take any and all criticism. I'm still really new, and strive to become better at this kind of thing. :3 Some transition techniques that you think I should learn would be much, much appreciated. So here are my works in the past month. I personally think Burn it out is my best, but that's just my opinion. Two of them don't have direct preview on the org, but there are still youtube links. I'm still trying to get a hang of this encoding thing as well, so bear with me. :/

Welcome to a-m-v.org! You seem to have a good attitude to get started, so I'll give all your AMVs a quick run-through. Since there is 5 of them, I may be a little less detailed than I normally would be.

+++++

Bang Bang Bang

Some video interlacing, blocking and banding. which made it hard to watch this one quality-wise. I really don't like Black Lagoon, so I'm not the best person to review this as an action video. XD But I think you did a pretty nice job with the scene selection, but felt like it could have used a little more editing here and there to match the fast pace of the song. Plus, the ending was really abrupt. 3/5

Happy Shiyatastic Birthday

Ha! Cute. :3 You did a nice capturing the cute manner of the song. THat being said, I think your "literal" sync bits hurt you . Such as putting up a picture of the Nazis on the word "clan", when you had previously been on a picture of N. Also, some of the anime you chose didn't fit as well. The ones that really stood out was Hellsing, because its Darker coloring/themes didn't really mesh with the other anime. I think that some of the hard cuts between VERY different types of scenes [like at 1:07] might have used a transition such as a fade/mask. LIp sync could have used a little more work/fine tuning.

BUT, when you did do the parts with Nichjiou, K-ON and similar ones, it was really cute and captured the song well. Nicely done. :) 3.5/5

Is Love Alive

Yay! A romance AMV. It's my favorite genre and the one that I edit most with.

I loved this. You did a nice job with the black fades (which as anyone here will vouch for me in saying that is a huge compliment, because I HATE black fades), and you NAILED the song with its lyric sync and mood sync. Really, the only things I have negativly to say about this one is that some scenes ran a little song and some of the hard cuts might have looked better with fades. Bakemongari also had a different frame size than the rest.

I LURVED the ending by the way. It's like we got the answer to the question that the song had been asking for the last few minutes.

ANYWAY, nicely done. I'm keeping this one for my collection, and I can recommend this one to others easily.

4/5

Burn It Out

Overall, I think you hit the mood of the song nicely, especially during the slower parts. I'm a huge Madoka fan, so I naturally love a lot of their stuff. ;)

Lip flap was here and there. This is where a character's mouth is talking but not being lip synced. Kind of took away from the AMV at a few key points (the opening for one).

I felt like you could have synced this one a bit more. You picked out some really nice scenes, and I liked how all of this started out with the headphones and followed through with it, BUT I wish it'd been a little more in touch with the music. See how you synced :51 with that effect? I wish that kind of sync had been prevalent during the musical parts of it, but with hard cuts/zooms/pans in tune with the drums and all the electronic noise as well. Maybe not ALL of it, but at least during the high paced parts.

3.5/5

Look What You've Done

Lip flap here and there that I think could have been removed.

The big issue I had a problem with was the conceptual timing of the AMV. You move from Hoeinheim leaving to them trying to ressurect their mother right away. I think you could have completely cut out Hoeinheim and started with the scenes of their mother collapsing/passing, and it would have given that scene a little more impact.

I feel like the AMV lacked focus towards the end. The first part was focusing on the stupidity of the characters using alchemy to do terrible things (for both good and bad reasons), but the latter part was just the death scenes and winry getting pissed. The scene at 2:03 was also ridiculously out of place, as well as the one at 2:11. HAd you kept with the concept of that, I probably would have loved this considerably more.

But, overall, you hit the mood of the song nicely enough.

3/5

**********

Keep it up! For an editor that's only been editing for a month, you've got some nice editing. If you ever need someone to beta test your work, don't hesitate to pm me.

Thanks a billion, trillion tons, man. :D I think the main reason why I made all of these errors was just due to just sheer laziness. But I really agree with everything you have to say here, and I will take all of this with me when doing my next project. Thanks again man. :3

BANG BANG BANG: LOL. And at least you have really good skill at syncing bullets to the beats.

HAPPY SHIYATASTIC BIRTHDAY: ROFLOL. Funny stuff, man. Me likes it.

IS LOVE ALIVE: Hmm...o...kay I guess.

BURN IT OUT: KICK-ASS CUTE. Kinda makes me wanna watch that anime, but I dunno. It also felt a little slow.

LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE: OMFGROFLOL (although you didn't intend for that). The moment I saw the poster I just cracked up. When you started the video with Hohenheim leaving, I was laughing for the rest of the video because I role-played:

Hohenheim: "Boys! I'm ho- JESUS CHRIST! MY HOUSE!!! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE??"
Al: "Hi dad..."
Hohenheim: "GOD DAMMIT! I LEAVE FOR ONE DAY AND YOU BOYS PULL HELL OUT OF YOUR ASS!"
Almost as hard as fighting a Holy Paladin.

The Black Lagoon One: Decently edited, but kinda boring due to the fact that the scene selection is just all over the place. I felt like there wasn't any message behind the video apart from random actions scenes synced to the music. It's hard for me to say anything more... there's not any egregious mistakes like logos, excessive lipflap or anything like that. Video quality is so-so, at times. My recommendation is to work on a cohesive theme for your video... something like "Roberta's decline into madness" or even a bit of an overview of the story of Black Lagoon. Give your AMV a purpose!

Well I wouldn't really look too much into that amv, since it was my second amv ever. XD I do get what you're saying though. Most of the other amvs after that try and give a certain concept and stuff. This one was more of a test of sync and just flat out experimentation of how to do things. But I do appreciate the feedback man, thanks. :D

OMG. XDDDDDD I just can't even describe to you how hilarious you make that video sound. At least you take a little something out of that fail. XD
