Graves of the Children

Post by Philotix » Wed Dec 16, 2009 10:12 am

I'm proud to announce my very first AMV, Graves of the Children.

I'm just going to repost the description here, because I'm not really sure quite what else to say:

Don't watch this unless you've already seen Grave of the Fireflies or never intend to.

This video is a product of love and pain, all at the same time. The film is amazing, and I recommend it to anyone. It's not a happy tale but it's a POWERFUL story. It was extremely hard for me to go through this movie again to find the clips, even without the audio. But that just shows how powerful the film really is.

Just as powerful is the music of the band Savatage, a brilliant band that is sadly virtually unknown. If you like this video, I recommend buying their albums Dead Winter Dead (where this song is from) and The Wake of Magellan.

I just hope that my very first music video did justice to them both.

I'd like to add the newly generated Preview and an alternate YouTube link for anyone that doesn't want to download it directly.

using the instructions in this thread
edit: I liked the first half, but the second is full of so much fail :/ over all a decent (if not long) noob video, much preferable to the sync fests you typically get as firsts around here.
If you do not think so... you will DIE

You picked a pretty hard song to make your first video with, because it's in fact pretty long and also has too many changes of mood, just like the movie.

I feel that the tracks you speeded up didn't look good, I guess you wanted to make it followed the action mood of the song, but showing some different scenes with more impact without the need of more speed would look greater. Like near 3.00, there was a great speed on the song but it didn't feel the same on the video. Considering the type of movie it is and the scenes it has, I have to confess it would be hard to mix it in a fairly cool way (without flashing random scenes if possible).

The scene with flame did add impact to the scenes, but in a moment it felt like it was too repetitive (in a part it looked like it was on loop like 3 consecutive times). The 'old' or 'film' effect wasn't bad at all, but in some parts I guess it was way too forced (3.53) and didn't look nice; I don't generally use it, but if you were to perform it in a cleaner way it could actually be much better.
Watchout as well when you slow down the clips speed, unless it's a little change most of the times it doesn't look 'natural'.

I believe you did a good song choice to the movie, and had a good overall concept of what to do. You just need to polish the execution, it's just your first video. Good to read you enjoyed the movie too

Yes, the reason why I sped up those scenes was to try to match the speed of the music. Someone else commented about this on another site, so it must indeed be a mistake. I'll try not to do that in the future.

And also I admit to using that flame too many times. Well I suppose you can't have a winner on your first try. I'll make sure not to make these mistakes in the future.
