Distant (Kanon AMV)

Post by 1moongoddess7 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 7:29 am

I wasn't really sure if I wanted to announce this one, but why not...

This was sort of a quick project, done more for fun than anything else. The editing itself only took a little over a day.
It's fairly simple and short, and there's only a tiny bit of masking and effects(which you probably won't notice much anyways).

All that being said, I'm actually pretty pleased with how it came out.

Didn't like all the crossfades. This would of turned out alright if you didnt fade everything all the time. You should try more simple cuts, trust me it looks better.

The song was really cute.. ~.~

I liked this a lot! There was a bit of an excessive use of the crossfades, but for the most part they fit well in the video. =) I especially loved that little effect of playing the clips in the tear/rain drop at the end and then cutting out to the bigger scene. Nicely done!
4/5. ^^

The Good:
I've got to say that I really liked something about this. Despite the excessive amounts of crossfades, this video touched me on a different level. Rather than relying on singular visuals early on in the video, the overlap actually made the overall emotions stick out more rather then specific scenes, and I really liked that feeling. Later in the video the use of fades died down and you were able to slip in some nice lyrical sync. The changes between those two styles, direct sync and not so direct sync really helped to get me through this video. I really enjoyed the song as well, I think this combination works perfectly and it's nice to see a simple cute video every once in a while. Your visual quality and song quality were good.

The Not So Good:
I have two nitpicky complaints about this video. One being that you seem to have some kind of grey space in between some of your fades. I'm not sure if I'm the only one who noticed this or not, but you may want to check your timeline and try to figure out why you have so much grey area in between your crossfades. Traditionally it should just fade one clip directly into the next with no in between. Again, double check your timeline and make sure everything is okay there, and be sure to look really closely too, it could just be a minor thing. The second complaint being your video quality; it's not that it's bad, but the aspect ratio looks wrong. It seems like you just ripped a DVD and then started editing right away without doing any scripting work to create a proper resize and crop, which is why you have those black borders on the top and bottom and why the video feels "scrunched". I noticed some blended frames in there too. If you change the speed of any of your clips, make sure to turn off frame blending if you're using Adobe Premiere, or resampling if you're using Sony Vegas.

Since I enjoyed this as much as I did, I've done the scripting and rendering for you, and a proper quality version in 848 x 480 with no black bars can be found here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?muyhjtdkojr

Feel free to replace the version you have up with the one I've rendered out if you like it more, or at the very least add it into the download options. In the future if you need some quality help like that, or have questions about how to do it, you can always shoot me a PM :)

4/5 from me

Very good job, the crossfades didn't bother me at all. But still, it's another simple Kanon amv :?

Thanks for all the reviews and advice, everyone. It's really helpful!

About the crossfades... I think I may have just rushed a bit too much on this.... That goes for the other technical issues as well. I might go back and try to fix some of that up a bit if I have time.
