Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

New EVA AMV

Post by netblaze » Thu Jul 03, 2008 3:40 pm

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I made my last AMV, I've been busy with some other things lately, but I hadn't let my skills dull too much. So.... for Persacon this year I decided to add a little Dethklok to the new Eva Rebuild 01 movie that my friend got ahold of.

Though I won the Action Category at Persacon, I want a little feedback from the a-m-v.org community to see what all of you guys think. The download looks pretty good, but not as good as the 900MB original, but I think it will amuse you.

Please let me know what you think

Thanks.

You asked for it:

Technical:

- Aspect Ratio
- Compression
- Interlacing

1) Aspect Ratio - My biggest pet peeve. You have this set to 720x526, which is close to, but not exactly 4:3, and in any case, You Are Not Alone is 16:9, and the standard for that, at least on the org, is 848x480.

2) Compression - You said this looks good, but have to tell you, no, it really doesn't. It has macroblocking out the wazoo. I don't know what you used to encode, but throw that junk out. Use ZarxGUI for h.264/mp4, or heck, you can get good results with xvid from Virtual dub.

3) Interlacing - You have interlacing. Period. Avisynth filter that crap. It's like a minute bit of code to write.

Content

- Originality
- Lip Synch
- Word Overlays

1) Originality - Mildly refreshing, as your style is about ten years ago. It's not original by really any stretch, but seeing a more classic editing style is still different enough to warrant mild interest on my part.

2) Lip synch - Just lame, and unnecessary. With your simpler, more retro editing style, I felt the lip synch was too much. Rather than add to the feelings of the video, it just seemed arbitrary and out of place.

3) Word overlays - While I understand you were trying to copy the style of EoE for this video, again, it came off as something that conflicted with your base style, and just seemed cheesy. Like your lip synch, I felt the words were unnecessary and hindered, rather than helped, the mood of the video.

Again, you did ask for it.
