AMV community lingo

Post by Corran » Sun Feb 15, 2009 1:29 am

I'm looking for a list of explanations regarding terms or concepts commonly used within the amv community that newbies may not immediately be aware of. The list can include community in-jokes, but only if everyone that has been here the last 3 to 4 years knows about them. (i.e. Kevin Caldwell or Vic Bond + lens flares) nvm

The difficulty in creating such a list is based on the fact that those of us used to these terms might not even realize newbies won't pick up on them easily.

For example, while most newbies should know that AMV = Anime Music Video they may not be familiar with:
  • Con = Short for "anime convention"
  • Contest trolling = Sending a previously winning video to additional contests simply to accrue more awards.
  • Fan-pandering = Editing at the lowest common denominator of what appeals to an anime convention audience for the sake of winning.
  • Lyric sync = Matching the lyrics of a song to literal or abstract visual imagery
  • Piano keys = Visually emulating piano notes in a song within a video. See Evolution or A Thousand Miles
  • r.e.a.d.f.a.g. = A stupid acronym for one of the most helpful guides on the site. It stands for Read <a href=http://www.a-m-v.org/guides/avtech31/>ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides</a>. If someone uses this without a link or explanation they are not being helpful or kind towards newbies.
  • vid = Short for "video"
Please avoid getting overly technical. General video terminology or somewhat technical terms that are frequently used in the forums are fine.

The idea for this came from a guide I started a long time ago that I would like to one day finish. Even if people participate in this, I can't guarantee that said guide will get finished, but it would be nice to have a list like this floating around...

Edit: Here is a current list of terms.

I remember when you were working on this...

Well, there's the obvious:

op - opinion
qc - quick comment

As for others, I don't know. There's a LOT of in jokes.

Does MEP need de-acronym-ising since it has its own sub-forum?

MEP = Multi-Editor Project = video with a large amount of editors/contributors.

And, yeah, there are a LOT of in-jokes.

1:1 = an opinion exchange, you give one opinion and you get one in return. (works with any number, but 1:1 is the most common)

mep = multi-editor project (not "Member of the European Parliament"...screw it already being posted, this is an important distinction )

script = AviSynth script. AviSynth is commonly used to clean up video footage.

Multi-angle problem = a problem seen when ripping certain DVDs (mainly Funimation titles like Full Metal Alchemist) where a small group of frames repeats, making playback look jerky. Solvable by re-ripping the DVD in IFO mode (when using DVDDecrypter)

VCA = Viewer Choice Awards, think people's choice awards...but for AMVs. The VCAs always seem to bring a lot of drama with them.

Internal sync = when motion inside the frame syncs to the music rather than relying on cuts.

Heck, as far as video-related terms, you could point them to AMV Technique Beat which goes one better and actually shows the concept being used at the same time.

(and do you know just how tempted I was to say 'lamestain' or 'harsh realm'?)

The differences between the various types of sync: internal, cut/beat, music, mood, lyric, lip, etc.

Common effects - star wipe, lens flare, piano key, flash, crossfade, hard cut

Site lingo - GAMV, journal junkie, #amv, youtube, op, qc, mep, VCA, JCA (if that wasn't a one time thing)

Technical lingo - AR, PAR, DAR, AVS, pre and post processing, h264, etc. Perhaps Read <a href=http://www.a-m-v.org/guides/avtech31/>ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides</a> and a link would be more appropriate for all of this stuff.

I'd leave injokes alone for the most part. The jokes either fall out of use or they morph into other things to quickly to really be covered by a guide. I mean imagine what the org would be like now if we still had people repeating the same old jokes that were around in 2001. Come to think of it, we do. Nevermind.

Your guide sounds similar to something I've been working on myself. Seriously, I'm writing a guide about all the non-technical aspects of amvs. I even went so far as to not use the word asshole or fuck once in the thing, although it does have my typical 3rd grade grasp of grammar which is one reason I haven't finished it. Anyway, point is, mind if I take a look at what you have? It may inspire me to modify what I'm doing some.

As a side note this is the first time I've ever noticed READFAG is now filtered to a much clearer phrase and with a link. Nice job doki.
