amv inactivity

Post by Koopiskeva » Tue Jun 26, 2007 6:23 am

Feel like you've been around too long? Yeah. Me too. I can't help it though, I still love AMVs. So, what happens now? I'm not sure.

Here's a conversation I had about it. Screw censorship too.

CTC Koopiskation (5:48:09 AM): wut to do
ShinoMatrix (5:48:14 AM): about age?
ShinoMatrix (5:48:21 AM): discover time travel
CTC Koopiskation (5:48:21 AM): nah
CTC Koopiskation (5:48:35 AM): pondering 'retiring' from amvs
CTC Koopiskation (5:48:42 AM): |:
ShinoMatrix (5:48:52 AM): can't you just... you know... not make them?
CTC Koopiskation (5:49:09 AM): yea, hence y i put that in quotes
CTC Koopiskation (5:49:22 AM): |:
ShinoMatrix (5:49:36 AM): but like... you gonna make a big fuss and say, "THAT'S IT! I'VE HAD IT WITH THIS DUMP!"
CTC Koopiskation (5:49:46 AM): oh im going to
ShinoMatrix (5:49:49 AM): XD
CTC Koopiskation (5:49:50 AM): just for kicks
ShinoMatrix (5:49:52 AM): that's the spirit
CTC Koopiskation (5:49:57 AM): ill make a retirement video
CTC Koopiskation (5:50:01 AM): |:
CTC Koopiskation (5:50:18 AM): where i greenscreen myself on a stage accepting an award
CTC Koopiskation (5:50:21 AM): yea...
CTC Koopiskation (5:50:22 AM): |:
CTC Koopiskation (5:50:41 AM): 'i hate this award and i hate u ALL, GOODBYE O:!!!"
ShinoMatrix (5:50:54 AM): XD
CTC Koopiskation (5:51:07 AM): eh im jk
CTC Koopiskation (5:51:25 AM): just reading up on old stuff just makes me realize how long ive been into amving
CTC Koopiskation (5:51:50 AM): i hear sierra gonna stop soon too
CTC Koopiskation (5:51:57 AM): i expect it to happen after awa though
ShinoMatrix (5:52:00 AM): yeah
ShinoMatrix (5:52:31 AM): and with every other post in her threads saying she's crap, i wouldnt be surprised that she does quit
CTC Koopiskation (5:53:08 AM): it happens, i know the feeling
CTC Koopiskation (5:53:08 AM): :\
CTC Koopiskation (5:53:40 AM): and i know why it happens too
CTC Koopiskation (5:53:41 AM): :\
ShinoMatrix (5:53:55 AM): mmm... but at least you've befriended most of the critics...
ShinoMatrix (5:54:17 AM): her being quiet in the community generally means she's attacked more openly
CTC Koopiskation (5:54:21 AM): i think it has most to do with that im actually active o the org
CTC Koopiskation (5:54:26 AM): yea
CTC Koopiskation (5:54:27 AM): :\
CTC Koopiskation (5:55:13 AM): either way its crap
CTC Koopiskation (5:55:13 AM): |:
ShinoMatrix (5:55:41 AM): mmm
CTC Koopiskation (5:56:07 AM): though im still a bit irked about silvermoon winning those vcas last yr, cuz alot of them were sympathy votes for her 'retirement'
ShinoMatrix (5:56:19 AM): yeah
ShinoMatrix (5:56:22 AM): very true
CTC Koopiskation (5:56:41 AM): thats the only thing that bugged me about her saying she's leaving
CTC Koopiskation (5:56:47 AM): :\
ShinoMatrix (5:56:52 AM): i like her editing, though it's not always revolutionary... but the stuff she had last year's vca were not so deserving i believe
CTC Koopiskation (5:57:04 AM): and if sierra does it this yr, she'll more than likely get the same votes
ShinoMatrix (5:57:08 AM): XD
ShinoMatrix (5:57:11 AM): probably
ShinoMatrix (5:57:28 AM): i think they only thing that anyone should be doing if they're thinking that they've had enough of amving is like... not compete anymore in cons and competitions
CTC Koopiskation (5:57:29 AM): ...over my dead body that is O:
CTC Koopiskation (5:57:51 AM): ahh
CTC Koopiskation (5:58:02 AM): actually its not so much the competitions and conventions thing
CTC Koopiskation (5:58:11 AM): i guess its the community
ShinoMatrix (5:58:15 AM): ah, ok
ShinoMatrix (5:58:21 AM): i suppose...
CTC Koopiskation (5:58:31 AM): just feel like ive been i it too long
ShinoMatrix (5:59:19 AM): well... i used to be very very active in Anime Academy forums... i'm still right now in the first page of the top posters there... but yeah, i slowly just disappeared from the community cos i was just seeing the same threads, seeing the same activities...
CTC Koopiskation (5:59:31 AM): ahh
CTC Koopiskation (5:59:35 AM): perhaps
CTC Koopiskation (5:59:49 AM): i still love amvs though
CTC Koopiskation (6:00:00 AM): i dont think ill ever stary that far
CTC Koopiskation (6:00:03 AM): *stray
ShinoMatrix (6:00:15 AM): i mean, i dont consider myself as "quiting" that community... but i think i understand what you mean by just being in the same community for too long
CTC Koopiskation (6:00:26 AM): yea
CTC Koopiskation (6:00:27 AM): :\
CTC Koopiskation (6:02:02 AM): maybe ill make a post
CTC Koopiskation (6:02:02 AM): |:
CTC Koopiskation (6:02:19 AM): i hate u all, diekthxbbq
ShinoMatrix (6:03:19 AM): XD
ShinoMatrix (6:03:25 AM): how about a hate list
ShinoMatrix (6:03:32 AM): and a comprehensive reason why you hate them
CTC Koopiskation (6:03:49 AM): 'because u eat garbage'
ShinoMatrix (6:03:55 AM): just... turn yourself beyond what godix and niotex and requiett can do combined
CTC Koopiskation (6:04:15 AM): um
CTC Koopiskation (6:04:27 AM): hatter?
CTC Koopiskation (6:04:27 AM): |:
ShinoMatrix (6:04:54 AM): huh?
CTC Koopiskation (6:04:57 AM): nvm
CTC Koopiskation (6:04:58 AM): >_>
CTC Koopiskation (6:05:24 AM): maybe ill post this conversation
CTC Koopiskation (6:05:25 AM): |:
ShinoMatrix (6:05:40 AM): probably serves the purpose as much as anything
CTC Koopiskation (6:05:56 AM): who hides stuff nowadays
CTC Koopiskation (6:05:58 AM): |:
ShinoMatrix (6:06:42 AM): meh... censorship is for the innocent

No, I didn't make this post saying I'm going to retire or anything. Sadly, most of the people that would be feeling similarly about AMVing have either left already or are inactive. |: ... So, what would you do? I feel like I should just take a break and come back, which I have been doing all along, but I'm not quite sure that's the case anymore.. I don't really feel like I'm outgrowing this hobby because I still love making/watching AMVs as well as meeting new editors. I guess reading up on old threads and seeing all these people 'retiring' (damn u aluminum) kind makes me wonder what they're on to say such things (and feeling old in the process |:> ). Man my thoughts are all over the place here.. coo.

Post your thoughts anyway?

i think people should make videos as much or as little as they want.... i dont think people should "retire" or whatever cause its not like a job or anything... i think it would be easier to just say "im taking a really longass break, and wont be back for a while/ im uninspired to make anything and i wont come back till i am inspired to make something" or whatever...

i feel like a newb compared to most people around here, but at the same time I'm going on 3 years (editing, about 8 years watching), which compared to others is alot longer, and they make me feel all old and stuff...

but i donno, i dont see myself retiring any time soon, and its not like i join contests to compete so that doesnt bother me... (contest drama that is) i just like getting my videos shown XD

The less drama about it, the better. The less you are sure of it, the better the chance you don't actually need to quit. I personally prefer as informal an approach to AMVing as possible on that.

I mean hey, there was actually a pretty good chance that I would not have made any videos since 2004. But I did and I'm glad of it, and the fact that I hadn't actually quit or anything made it all the easier for me. The only circumstance where I see myself making The Last Video is if I know for some reason that I'm going to die or something, otherwise...

Stuff changes. As do people. I wouldn't make a big deal of it either way.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

All the fucking time, Kewp. All. The. Fucking. Time.

I've been sharing some stories lately of what it was like back in good ole 1999.

I feel the pain. I've contemplated skipping the big next omg3dvid idea I always was gonna do and just doing my own original stuff. I feel like it'd be a better use of my energies.

Doubt I'll ever retire as I still find amv's fun to make and watch, (mostly it's just hanging out with you guys), but as Niotex said one time on skype, something to the effect of "we're kina beyond amv's at this point" which I've always kinda felt.

I don't mean for that to be some kind of elitist comment or anything, because I really like what people do around here, but it's just some of us have different creative goals.

Nice Hatter reference.

Anyway, I'm not really sure. I mean, in a way this ties into a lot of different things that could be described as 'trends' here - editors who have been around for longer than 4 years (arbitrary number) have seen certain things ebb and flow and start wondering how they're going to continue - it happens sooner or later.

Being heavily involved with the convention and contest scenes and having those 'this stuff will win the prize, this stuff won't' criteria pounded in over and over again eventually would get to the point where they could start judging themselves on the ability to do something that would get mass acceptance rather than their own personal satisfaction and begin to see their drive to edit decline (makes me think sometimes, 'thank heavens I've rarely pursued that avenue'), or as their tastes get more sophisticated in regard to what they want to see and consistently see the community sticking around in what they see as the past, it makes one want to pull their hair out and leave. Other times maybe there are too many other things in real life sapping away the energy one needs to draw from to edit. Whether these things make the person think they're outgrowing the hobby or not, maybe it's that the focus is too heavily put on constantly putting out videos to really be considered as part of the community even in instances when they don't have any inspiration to create, in which case a long break or at least a period of much-reduced activity could be the right medicine.

Wow, that was definitely rambling, wasn't it.

I'd make a note of a "leave of absence" if you were public and about to go underground. That way people who knew you won't think you just disappeared. Like a post in your journal.

Anything more sounds like you're defending your choice to quit to a bunch of angry fans. Or like you're posting for attention, hoping your friends will talk you out of the decision by reminding you how much you're loved here.

Just don't make a big post when/if you come back. Those are very embarrassing to read.

"I'm back! Didja miss me??"
"...who are you?"
