Question about the star scale

Post by Shadowfox85 » Tue Aug 01, 2006 9:50 pm

Alright someone probably has already asked this question before, but i can't find it, so im asking again, sorrry if im annoying someone with probably an obvious question.

About the star scale, i see the two columns, Score and Star, and I know that the Star is basically the average i was given for all the stars i've received on an amv, i know that. but what im confused about is about the "Score" column. That score is usually be lower than my average amount of stars. Im just wondering how is this so-called "Score" calculated and why would it be lower than the average everyone rates an amv?

And also, just another thing, with the new thing in the profile where the star average scores are now shown before downloading, i have another question. A bunch of them have like 40th or 70th place or something. Just wondering what are they 40th or 70th in? I thought it was probably the recent top star scale for the latest week, but it wasn't. Where are these placed?

Thanks again for taking the time to review this, and one last thing. I just uploaded a new amv but it hasn't shown up on the "New vid on the bloc" thing, and its been like 30 minutes, so just to make up for that, anyone reading this, check out my new Tsubasa Chronicles amv

I was kinda wondering this too. :P And what's the difference between 'score' and 'raw'??? and is the Average Count the average of stars any one video gets? ...man, are we gonna get kicked in the head for this.

I'm not entirely sure, but i've convinced myself of the folowing.

Avg (raw) is just that, the raw average of your stars. Avg (score) is the average after all of the various tweaks are done to it in the system. The removal of the 1s from the people that just give 1s, the removal of the 5s from the people that just give 5s, that sort of thing. I'm sure statistical averaging is done to it to make it more acurate.

In answer to the second question (that i seem to have glossed over). That's percentile rank. I.E. that video has been deemed to be better than / have more downloads than approximately x percent of the videos here.

And yes, the last bit does make this look like spam.

The avg 'score' is also weighted like the top 10 list to make "more stars = higher scores." That means the more stars you get, the closer weighted score will be to what people are actually giving you. If you have few stars, your high score will be lowered. If you have a crapload of stars, the scores will be equal.

Ex: I have a raw score of 3.829. Because I only have 41 stars, the weighted score is lowered to 3.694.

At the same time, another vids has a raw score of 3.909, with almost 4000 stars the weighted score is 3.906 - almost equal to what people are really giving me.

It's just a way to show that the more people who rate your video, the more accurate the score is compared to the rest of the local vids on the site. You can choose which method you like better when sorting vids on the star scale, and using the "sort by stars" option on the super search.

Sweet thanks everyone for ur answers, and also wanna say sorry bout the last bit, i didn't think it would be considered as spam, i was just putting that up because it wouldn't be shown on the "Newest vid on the block" thing, which i thought was strange, but ya i wont do that in the future now that i know. the site adjusts your raw average score towards the site average score, which is 3.4ish i think. the adjustment will be stronger towards 3.4 if you have fewer stars, and weaker (that is closer to your raw average score) if you have more stars.

it's the percentile rank of your video. 70th means 70% of star rated videos on the site have a lower score than yours.
