Is one category more improtant than another in an amv?...
I know I've asked this question in the past but didn't quiet get the answer I was looking for. Do you think one category in an amv is more improtant than another. For me I think there is slight more importance of one category to another. For example
#1 action sync - An amv can have good quality and sound and fancy effects but if the action sync is not timed right, does not go with the lyrics or has no flow then the amv is not worth watching because you probably willn't be interested just because of random effects and good quality. As long as the amv has decent quality and not like VHS or recorded off the tv or fansubs with subtitles, then action sync takes priorty.
#2 (tie) Capture/ Sound - The capture and sound quality comes in 2nd because for me at least a video should have decent to excellent quality for it 7.5 or higher. If it has a 5 being a decent VHS to 7.49 being high quality VHS or DVD quality with a little interlacing or pixelation then that hurt its reviewability some.
#4 (tie) Digital Effects and LipSync - The reason I put these as the 4th most improtant is because they are suppost to be there to enhance the video. You can have a perfectly good video with the first three categories I listed above. However Digital Effects and Lipsync if not done right will hurt reviewabilty and the overall score of the video.
#6 (tie) Originality and Reviewability - I have to say all categories in an amv are improtant but these two categories don't hold to the technicality of the video. Originality holds to the creative side. Reviewability while it could hold to the technical side its more of the entertainment overall.
The reason I made this post is because I'm trying to rework a new judging system for an amv contest I'll be running at the college hopefully in the future.
So the breakdown of the scoring percentage would be
(If all video contain all categories)
Action Sync -30%
Capture Quality - 20%
Sound Quality - 20%
Digital Effects - 10%
Lip Sync - 10%
Originality - 5%
Reviewability 5%
If video contains (Lip Sync or Digital Effects only)
Action Sync 32%
Capture Quality 21%
Sound Quality 21%
Digital Effects or Lip Sync 12%
Originality - 7%
Reviewability 7%
If the video contains (neither Lip Sync or Digital Effects)
Action Sync - 34%
Capture Quality - 23%
Sound Quality - 23%
Originality - 10%
Reviewability - 10 %
Do you think this is a fair way to judge videos in a contest? Do you think the categories are broken up into the right order of importance or are they all important equally? All categories are important and play a major part in creative an amv but I've always looked at it as some categories being slightly more important than the others. Well let me know what you think.

Where would you put lyric sync. Action Sync is described as "How well the music went with the action of the video. If the action matches up well with the video score high. If it looks like the two are unrelated or off score low." This is in the submitting op part of the video. So really it is talking about beat sync, flow and lyrical sync how well are the scenes relating to the words of the music. Action Sync is not always about does that hit a beat, does that transition hit right. At least when I look at a video I always take lyrics into consideration of telling a story that goes with the song.

I feel sometimes people rely too heavily on lyrical synch. I for one have always focused much more on the mood or atmosphere of a song. I've seen some videos out there that are basically just clips played with a direct link to the lyric, that make the video overall make no sense, because really all the creator is doing is taking clips from all over an anime series, giving this random series of events. Lyrical synch isn't overly important, but that's just my opinion.
I agree with generally the lineup you have, although reviewability is a hard one to pin anywhere. The importance of how reviewable a video is varies greatly from video to video. I think trying to judge videos by a system has it's positives and negatives. Sometimes i think you should go by gut instinct, because your scoring isn't always going to be as accurate as you'd like, and the order in which you view the videos to be judged will greatly affect each videos score. For instance, watching a horribly bad video (/cough/ Angry Again /cough/, and then a mediocre one, will make the mediocre on seem better than it actually is. Not always the case, but it does happen. So i guess what i'm saying is, is judge them all by gut instinct, then do you set out judging scheme, and if it works out then good for you.

There are two types of lyrical sync, good lyrical sync that tells a story that flows together. And those that are so literal that just seems random. That's why in action sync you have to account for flow, beat sync, mood, and lyrical sync. Each one of them makes a part of action sync up. So if your lyrical sync is too literal your mood is going to be thrown off and possibly your flow. So your score is going to get hurt there. So your not going to get the points just because you match the words, it is how you match them to make it work.

What makes a video important to me as a viewer is whether or not I enjoyed watching it. So reviewability is number one. If I don't want to watch it again, the video doesn't matter to me (even if it's my own).
Capture that is really awful - like in the 5 and under rank of awful - can kill a video for me. So this is somewhat important, but only for fuzzy vids with CN logos or constant subtitles.
Lyric sync - if we're including that in the 'action sync' category, is important to me in any video that isn't intentionally random. If the footage doesn't fit the lyrics, stick with a random action vid and stop pretending there's a story there. This doesn't count for foreign language videos, just English ones. Action sync = beat sync can kill a video if it's too fast and trying so hard I can't follow the footage anymore. My favorite vids usually have an 8 for action sync because they don't throw a thousand clips at me trying to do something for every single beat or cord in the song. I'd say lyric sync is 3rd most important, but action sync is down there with Effects - I prefer the video not to be a technical blinding wonder, so the higher the technical sync score, the lower my reviewability.
I rarely watch videos with lip sync, so it doesn't matter much to me. I dislike random lip flap, but I've been told it's natural to show scenes of mouths flapping around during an instrumental section and unnatural to cut them out. Whatever. I don't really care anymore.
Effects tend to bring down a video's reviewability for me more than anything but excessive action sync, so they're least important - very few of my favorite vids have effects, so this category doesn't matter for them. Unless you count N/A as a score to be ranked, in which case I'd give it a zero - still last.
..
It just depends on why you're watching videos. I watch for the anime characters. I don't watch or enjoy non-anime music videos because I have no appreciation for music videos as an artform. I'm in it for the anime. I can't hear every single cord in a song, so why should I care if the editor ignored some of them? Chances are I won't even notice. Same with capture - if I love the footage and the theme, all I need is to be able to see the video at full screen. A little fuzz won't kill me or hurt my enjoyment of the video. Sure, I enjoy it bright and clean, but I'm really not that picky. All the technical aspects in the review breakdown are insignificant compared to reviewability. If I don't enjoy it, the video doesn't matter, even if it's technically the best video in the world as far as editing and encoding go. I'll name a technically great video as a great video, but it won't go on my favorites list unless I like it. ^_^;

I would break the catagories down like this.
Editing: 55%
Originality: 25%
FX: 15%
A/V Quality: 5%
Lip Synch is part of the editing catagory in my opinion. Its kind of dated that we have it as its own catagory, but the ratings were made back when making proper lip sync was an EVENT.
I wouldn't even make Reviewability 1%. Judging a videos worth on how often you watch it is as silly as judging a movie on how often you watch it. Placing weight behind a catagory which by its very nature is genre biased isn't very impartial nor is it right in my opinion. Comedy videos will always have higher revieability than drama videos because of the very nature of comedy and drama. To therefor inherintly make comedy more impoartant than drama, is wrong. How many times have people seen Casablanca? Not as many times as they've seen Airplane.
I would definitely give originality much more credit than 5%. It could be argued that originality is THE MOST important factor in anything creative. How can you enjoy something that isn't fresh? How can you enjoy something that you have seen a milon times before? By your scale, if I entered in an awesome DBZ/Linkin Park video with good capture quality and no FX, it would stand shoulder to shoulder with something like Shameless Rock Video. Videos are all about what you want to say creatively. If your video says nothing, or says something we've all heard, or says something that someone else has said better, it sucks.
A/V is almost a non-factor in today's videos. If the video quality is bad, the editing is bad 99% of the time. Its not worth allocating a bigger share of worth for something that is so rarely an issue. If you get a video that has terrible capture quality, its probably going to have awful editing, no FX, no lip synch, and maybe some marginal originality. You can pick and choose from the other major flaws before you get to A/V quality. Thats why I give it 5%.
