Motivation issues

Post by Pyle » Fri Aug 13, 2004 6:31 pm

I've been working and trying over and over to get this one vid right. Each time, I have the wrong anime, or the I'll find the right anime but it will be the wrong song...or I'll get some effects and sync put in and realize that they don't match. I've tried this with more then 25 videos now, and I'm getting increasigly afraid that I might not make AMV's anymore.

:(

By this time, it feels like obligation. What should I do?

If you don't enjoy it, don't do it.

AMV making (at least in my opinion) should be something done primarily because you enjoy it.

Maybe try stopping for a while and maybe you'll have an idea hit you that you will want to do and then go for it.

Don't do it if you aren't enjoying it (or looking very forward to the end result)

You need to figure out your priorities here, Pyle. I know why you make vids, I know who your 'idol' is and that you dream of making one of those 'great' videos that will be accepted by all. But if that's why you're doing it, then it will feel like an obligation - it will be an obligation. If you're trying to make something for the masses, then you have an obligation to please the masses, that's all there is to it. Until you find what will please them, and pull it off, you'll never finish - you won't get that 'praise' in payment for your work. But all of that effort will still be work - because you're doing it for them.

Make something for you first. Drop all this worry crap and do something for you. Then, after you've done that, add in those eyecandy bits, those effects that you need to 'fit' the requirements, rearrange the editing so the buffs won't gripe at you, and perfect the video so that it's barely recognizable. Then step back and just look at it. If you still like it, even after it's been changed from a personal video into a marketing piece, then you've fulfilled your obligation and pleased yourself. If you feel like you've just wasted weeks into months of your life, realize that making vidoes for anyone but you is most likely going to suck big time.

It just depends on where you get the pleasure from, what gives you the urge to edit. If it's a need to please others, then you'll always feel like you're running a race to touch the ground before that jet a hundred kilometers ahead of you - pointless since you'll both crash and burn, but if you're fast enough, good enough, you'll get there first.

I guess that's better than having no motivation whatsoever.

The best videos are made when the creator doesn't care about the crowd and makes it completely for himself.

Euphoria
Urban Ragnarok
Eternal Damnation
Mad World (Nightowl)

Actually not to dissagree with beo, but ALOT of creators made the videos for loved ones and etc (while not REALLY dissagreeing, it is a "crowd" of sorts).

So yeah he's right, but I find alot of modivation from friends, family, and basicly loved ones.

Motivation isn't the kind of thing you can "wait" for, or make happen. Inspiration usually hits when you aren't expecting it, and when you try to force it, it either doensn't work, or you will just lose interest. I think if you just quit trying for a while, and do things you enjoy, better ideas will come to you.

I don't even give it much thought; I mean, at least for me, AMVs are not my only hobby or interest, or way of spending time. So, when my mind is on AMVs, I make AMVs. When my mind is elsewhere, I don't really worry about AMVs. Because there's other things for me to think about in my free time other than AMVs.

Of course, that results in terrible inconsistency and other negative side effects (such as my current temporary uselessness as an op writer...), but it certainly keeps me happy. And, experience shows, if I let AMVs slide for a while and not do anything about them, I still come back to them eventually, and with a fresh mindset to boot
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
