Can AMV's Be collector Items? (Seriously)

Post by genestarwind21122 » Tue Jun 01, 2004 5:36 pm

My question to everyone on the org is can amv's be collector items? Seriously think about it. I downloaded Sierra Lorna's Rainbow video about a month and a half ago and it was great. So then I go over to my friends house download it for him yesterday she has a new version with the translations in it. ( subtitled). Or what about Amv's from the past for instants at one point in time alternatefutures Light of Day wasn't online anywhere until the local links. If I never informed him about fileplanet or anything he wouldn't probably have put it back up. Then would it be a collector items to the one who downloaded it.

Or what about a creators first amv for instant my first amv eventhough it was far from the greatest is no longer available for download. What if someone else had done the samething with there video and one of us won contest after contest then wouldn't you want to have the amv that started them off. That started off there amv hobby.

What do you think? Let me know if you think having the original version and then the new version is put up instead would allow certain amvs be called a collectors item under certain circumstances. And anything I typed in the paragraphs above.

it would be pretty funny if they could.

( :?: thinking about it a step further maybe the creators can auction off original drafts of their videos on ebay..... or maybe a screenshot of the project file?!?! :P  )

I think the only real value you are going to get is nostalgia.
Just think that in 5 or ten years time the musical style of popular bands will likely be totally different. It would be like playing an old Duran Duran, or Inxs CD that you found lying around. Now that I think about it, anime is likely to be about the same. Some shows like the Miyazaki stuff is good for darn near forever but much of it will fade with time.

Imagine trying to explain to your grandkids just why you thought 'Daphne in brilliant blue' was good.
Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Anything can be collectable, just check antique markets. AMVs are collected by people right now, like you and me. :) As for value, they can be downloaded and copied free so there may never be physical value, only an aesthetic value.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

"I'll trade you a copy of Euphoria for a copy of Berserk Synopsis"
"I have 23089657283068290792 copies of Euphoria, why would I want another one..."
"Oh, in that case... Never mind..."

That would be fucking hilarious

the thing about collector items is they can't be reproduced.
AMVs can be, and quite easily. and people are usually willing to share them.

so the only way they could be (valued) collector items is if one or a few people owned a copy of the amv, and everybody that did own a copy was unwilling or unable to share it.

really crappy videos could be rare, but they'd be valueless, because no one would want to see them anyways.

Thanks for the feedback. It was just a hypothetical question. I wasn't intending there to be any value to them. Just the rarity of some amvs and limited time some of them are out for sometimes.

Anyone else has an opinion about this? Please feel free to post.
