Does 'HITS' mean that your video came up during someone's search, or that someone downloaded it?

It just means someone clicked the 'vid description' page link and went to that page. It counts how many people (or how many times someone) go to the video description page. The download count should be visible on your 'edit my videos' page, it's a separate number altogether.

yeah the download number is the number right beside the Local (or in/direct download) selection. You can only see that number in the edit videos section as arigatou mentioned
