Isn't the star rating system...redundant?
I mean, we have the opinion system which is a hell of a lot more in-depth and useful, so why have the star rating system?

Because it's a lot harder to force feedback if the person has to write something. Clicking a button is quick and easy - and somehow people *still* find it a hassel.
Star ratings are guaranteed feedback from everyone who downloads a locally hosted video. It's forced, and assured. You don't get that from reviews no matter how useful or useless they are - they're rare and some people will never get more than 2 for a single video unless they beg for reviews. If they're on local, at least they'll be sure to get some sort of feedback from the viewers, even if it's one averaged number.

A) Until recently I had never realized how useless some reviews are. Looking at the ops on various videos I've seen things like totally pointless ascii art, leaving a review that says in it's entirety 'WTF?', and other similar things that don't actually tell anyone anything. It took me awhile to pick up on the fact that it's entirely possible to have 10 ops without a single one of them actually saying anything worthwhile.
B) Unless you're a very popular creator or you beg then you probably aren't getting many ops. Combine this with A and most videos don't have any real feedback to the creator on how people like it.
C) Unsolicited ops tend to be the extremes, either people loved the video or they hated it. Either way they had to have an extreme reaction to take time to write an op (ever wonder why the average op is over 8 when on a ten point scale an expected average would be roughly 5?) The star rating gives you an average of all the viewers impressions rather than just the extremes.

I get the feeling the reason the same people win the VCA year after year is more because of favoritism then real skill.godix wrote:A) Until recently I had never realized how useless some reviews are. But don't get me wrong. I'd be the first to say that Koop, AD, Fluxmeister, and dokidoki are damn good creators. All I'm saying is that there is plenty more deserving creators out there as well, just that nobody ever gets noticed in their dark and cold shadows.
Also, they have good editing programs. I don't. Meh

koop's programs for euphoria didn't cost 600 bucks
as for the original question, all the main points were hit. opinions should be a chance for us to help and critique each other's videos. however, it's been a while since i've read a helpful review though on one of my videos.

Indeed, there's actually a freeware demo of Magix floating around that has almost all the same capabilities. And well, who DOESNT have mspaint?
As for the star system, now that it actually shows the star ratings on the vid profile page, I think its fabulously useful.

I personaly like the review system better then the star system for one reason. When done right, you really do get useful feedback about what to improve on. But also the star system is still great. cuase it is forced and simple. I want feedback more then a score. I want to improve.

Re: Isn't the star rating system...redundant?
Hey,
I personally have very little free time. I can't spend a lot of time downloading not-so-good videos looking for a good video. When I want to download a good video that I haven't seen yet, the star scale rating is a big factor for me and is usually an accurate indicator for overall "goodness". There are, on the other hand, videos that I personally find to be really good that have lower star ratings. I retort with a high rating. When the "suggestion query" is (eventually) completed, this will help in more accurately finding videos that will appeal more directly to me rather than just the membership as a whole.
I hope this helps. Thanks again and have fun!! ^_^

It seems you are taking this from the video creator's point of view. The difference and usefulness in the system is best appreciated from the fan point of view. Think of the star system more as a "point me to a good video" system rather than a feedback system for video creators and its usefulness is apparent.inthesto wrote:I mean, we have the opinion system which is a hell of a lot more in-depth and useful, so why have the star rating system?

So..phade.. while I totally agree with you on the star system idea, ...whats the point if the star rating isn't listed with the video information?
The star rating can only be viewed through a members profile? I don't EVER access videos like that. =/
