Top AMV creators crossover to mainstream media?

Post by y2kwizard » Fri Jan 02, 2004 8:16 pm

I've been wondering over the past few years at the amazing creativity in terms of special effects and editing techniques that many of the top AMV creators have displayed. The thought has often crossed my mind that I'd MUCH rather have these AMV creators editing, directing, and doing SFX for the mainstream video/movie productions than some of the current guys. I just enjoy how the top AMV creators are very meticulous about their work and try to live up to a standard of perfection.

So I wonder...have any of you top AMV creators ever considered crossing over into mainstream media/TV? You certainly have the talent...if you have considered crossing over but have decided not to, why did you decide not to move?

Thank ye much!

It's an interesting thing, the media. The main issue is that almost everything revolves around time and money, which explains the fact that much of what you'll see doesn't seem as good as what the better known AMV creators produce. Because this is a hobby and not an occupation, we can afford to put as much time and effort into what we produce as we want. However, in terms of the editors who work as agents of the mass media, they need to work damn fast in order to support themselves. This is just my 2 cents on that subject. As for actually crossing over, Im applying to college right now and hope to major in Film, so maybe someday my name will be in some credits somewhere.

Regardless, I know Vlad, AD, and some other people have done paid work in editing.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I work at a TV station here in Austin TX.

I've done a few paid productions myself. Nothing to fancy. Just stuff people need (like info commercial, Promotions, etc.)

Love the work and love the people (when they aren't asking for the impossible) :D

I did some freelance editing for my company once. It was a Dell Service sensitivity training video for the company I work for. All the footage was already shot, I just had to cut and paste the takes together coherenently and compress it for net stream viewing. 7 hours of work for like 100 bucks. :?

One thing to keep in mind , editing for a living is nothing like editing for a hobby. I'ts very much a different experience and some who do it as a hobby may not like doing it for a living.

In the end it's work like everything else where you have to please the customer, do what he wants and do it in the least amount of time so as to actually make money at it. yes it can be enoyable but you have to have a toatly different mind set then for making AMVs for fun

I agree with Vlad. Right now I am working on a background video for an up-and-coming industrial band for a club show in February. Although they have given me artistic licenses, I still find myself restrained by the source and time. Its pretty high stress. But to me worth while, because at the very least I have something nice to put on my resume.
