Spoof Trailer Method

Post by DJ_Izumi » Fri Mar 07, 2003 9:17 am

For anyone who's ever made a trailer, I'd like to pop a question about your methods. I see two major ways to do it, one is to do your best to copy the original trailer, bit by bit, to make an anime clone. Another is to take just the audio track, listin to it carefully, and base your editing souly on the sounds, and not the visuals of the real trailer. I kind of like a mixing of both, so as to lead in some originality, yet keep the feel of the real movie that's being spoofed.

I was wonder what others do in the lines of trailer making.

I pretty much do a mix of both- where scenes exist and they look good with the rest of the video, I try and follow the original trailer. But, they don't always exist, or look good when taken with the whole, and it's for these I'll go to editing by sound. Though in some cases that's not really possible- for example in trailers like the Dark City trailer I used for Dark Metropolis- it's just pure instrumental music, no sound effects or VO. In the case of it, especially at the end where it needed to build up to a climax, it just wouldn't work to try and match up the scene content with the original, though I tried to keep with the cuts between clips the same.

In the end, as long as it looks and flows well, it's all good! 8)

Also..don't forget fan trailers, which are trailers based completely on the anime being used, made with audio (usually from the anime + sound effects that may be added) and music chosen by the creater (of the amv that is) himself/herself.

I've done two original, fan trailers actually. One for Evangelion, and another Patlabor 2. More fun, I keep trying to get the 'American trailer' feel. But trailers like that are more rare.

for trigun-ic park i tried cloning the movie as close as possible at first, then i couldn't think of cloned areas so i matched up sounds. so for me it was a mix.

Marlex's Spike's 11 is a great trailer. Unfortunately, it's not up for download  It was SushiBoyJared's "A WINNER IS YOU!" award at MegaCon.

A good fan-made trailer is XenoDrake's The Phone That Never Rings, in which he mixed Evangelion audio with a Xenosaga song. Again, not up for download

=O hehe, thanks for the plug and it will be up on my FTP as soon as i cen fix a security bug with it, ill be dishing out links in the review swap forum here soon. ^_^

DJ_Izumi: if you want to see it sooner, i can AIM transfer it. im usaly on most of the day so drop me a line and ill give ya a play by play. i really like this one cuz it was all orignal, like you said i just listend to the audio and picked parts i liked and then added the best footage to fit it and the song. was a blast to make cuz i was telling the story this time, and not just following an editing patern.

hey Xeno, remember that time we stayed up all night spamming?
