Themes are usually a particular band, or album, or anime series, sometimes holidays or insular studio projects - these tend to be short, typically not longer than 20 mins. Others with more abstract themes (like the Video Game Projects or AMV Hell series) can go for much longer run times and are sometimes referred to as massive MEPs, although that may be more of a circa-2004 term.
*and yes, I know the DDR projects and Animix technically fall into the not-quite-so-abstract section, even though they're all about an hour long.
