Now that all depends on whose taste this contest is based on. I've seen at least two fitting uses of the star wipe that spring to mind, namely BogoSort's It's Tricky to Make a Music Video and one of the Abenobashi segments in the Animix project... :/SSJVegita0609 wrote:I hereby challange someone to use the starwipe tastefully.Otohiko wrote:It's like those people who like eating rotten cheese and frogs, eh.

I think in Bogo's video the star wipe was put in as parody/joke elements, so I'm not sure if it can be ever be considered tasteful. Appropriate, maybe.Kitsuner wrote:Now that all depends on whose taste this contest is based on. Star wipe is like a tricked out Cadillac Escalade at the Concours d'Elegance. It might be the nicest looking Escalade with 24" dubs, piano black gloss paint, chrome everywhere, lowered to the weeds, DVD players and TVs galore, and the meanest sound system ever, but tasteful it is not.

Check that video out. It uses a star wipe perfectly.

It's kind of like people with garden gnomes in their yard!Beowulf wrote:It kind of hurts me to say this, but I think you guys are giving people way to much credit.
It wasn't Koop's fault, nor was it AE's fault. Behind all those shitty videos are people who made them, who LIKE them, and who think they are AWESOME. AE doesn't create terrible effect clones. People with god awful fucking taste do.
You can't learn taste. If you genuinly think that those awful tacky effects look great, then thats it. You like it.
Thats why we have bad videos.

But if many people have a good opinion of it because it is done appropriately in a certain context, then it is in good taste. As a few people have already pointed out, taste is subjective. Tasteful is simply whatever is agreeable to you. Something in good taste, on the otherhand, is whatever the majority thinks is tasteful. If you don't agree with the majority, they'd say you're the one with bad taste. So if most people agree that the star wipe in It's Tricky was good, then it's in good taste. I don't know if most people do, so I can't say. But I think it's tasteful.requiett wrote:Appropriate within the confines of a certain situation does not make it in good taste.Blanco22 wrote:Check that video out. It uses a star wipe perfectly.
I don't like the videos that have so much shit moving, flying, spinning, and/or transforming that it doesn't matter what anime they use, because I can't see what's going on anyway. I watched a video the other day where half the video was what I'd call eye candy, except that it actually hurt my eyes. When a video is about effects, and not the anime and music, then it has gone too far. Some people might call them technical achievements, I call them headaches.

Of course. Your logic is infallable: Taste is popular majority. Why didn't I realize that sooner?Blanco22 wrote:But if many people have a good opinion of it because it is done appropriately in a certain context, then it is in good taste.requiett wrote:Appropriate within the confines of a certain situation does not make it in good taste.Blanco22 wrote:Check that video out.
